Has anyone upgraded their backup camera? I noticed yesterday in my girlfriends Kia, that her backup cam was remarkably more clear than my camera. I know the display should be able to have a better resolution than what the camera is capable of (at least I’m fairly certain) so I pondered the idea of just purchasing a better camera and installing it in the factory location. My main questions are 1: Is it possible to upgrade and keep it in the factory location, and 2: Has anyone already done this and have some insight. Even if you haven’t done this and would like to offer some helpful advice on your reasons why it will or won’t work, I’d definitely appreciate it. Thanks guys.

Mine gets dirty very easy, trucks seem to pull up the road spray more than cars, it seems pretty good if I keep it clean, usually just a thumb wipe

Mines fine as long as it isn’t covered in dirt

Pretty sure there's another thread in here somewhere about this, though I don't recall if there were any answers? Our system isn't bad, but there are better/clearer systems out there. My wife has an MB with a crystal clear picture, but even some rentals I've had from foreign and domestic makers have been a little bit better. It's only ever after driving a different vehicle that I notice the difference.

Better cameras would be the easiest fix, if available? For right now I just make sure that I always have the lenses clean and clear in order to get the best out of the system.

I noticed this as well, my 2020's backup camera looks like a child's coloring book when compared to older model cars from other makes.

The quality has more to do with the limited resolution of the screen on the headunit, which i think is something 800x400 which is barely standard def, then the camera

I get its not great but it gets the job done, do people need 4k to backup and not hit anything?

The camera is fine. People already complain these trucks cost too much and then they expect to have all the highest quality parts in them. It’s a work truck, not a Bentley

True. It is fine. It does the job with the exception of night time for me. On that note, if it’s an easy and inexpensive upgrade that could make it better, why wouldn’t I? As far as work trucks go, I seen an f350 with a better camera. That’s a work truck also albeit much more expensive, but my point is the matter.

Not exactly looking for 4K, but a little bit more clarity would be nice and add a little bit of safety and assurance.

Hmmmm. I only made the assumption based off the clarity of the radio station pictures, etc. They seem to be more than enough of what I’m searching for. Thank you for at least giving me an idea of its limitations though. That’ll help me in the future if I find anything.

I agree. I’m not searching for Lamborghini quality parts. Just something a little better. I mean, my girlfriends Kia is a base model and it’s fantastically clear in comparison.

You are asking too much from Toyota. You want a nice and clear back up camera buy a ford.

Agreed. I try to keep it pretty clean all the time. Also looking into brighter reverse bulbs for night time to see if that helps some.

Something else to keep in mind. At night, turn your headlights off for a clear picture.

Agreed. I do use my vision as well as the helpful camera in combination. It’s just to assist with various other things also.

I did read that and brighter is better. I’ll try both and see which is best.

Absolutely upgrade it if you feel it is not up to par. I believe there are some threads about installing new cameras and getting them to work with the stock screen as people do it with front facing cameras.
