Just remember 1 very important new tarantula keeper tip: If you find your spider on its back with its legs curled up chances are good that it's NOT DEAD, it's just molting. A dead spider will actually remain upright with the legs curled underneath it. I've heard of a few new tarantula keepers assuming their spider was dead when they found it like that and they threw them out.

 

Ive seen a few molt videos and yup, on their back. And it takes hourrssss to squeeze out! Or maybe when they’re bigger it does?

 

Chances are good that you'll miss the smaller spiders molting as they are very quick. But yeah the big ones can take a long time. When I filmed the one below it was probably about 3 hours.

Her belly is fuuullll!! I’ll wait a day or two and see how much her abdomen shrinks.

 

Anything close to her just won’t escape easily!

 

Probably a week in between feedings is good for the small spiders.

 

Goliath Bird-Eater nearly gave me a heart attack today. When I carefully opened the lid to spray a little water into the enclosure she immediately bolted out into the open. Amazing how fast these spiders, even the larger ones like this, can be when they want to.

 

That thing is awesome!

 

It really is. Now just imagine it 2x-3x larger.

 

This specimen is dead, but you get the idea.

 

How big is she compared to this specimen??

 

I don't know if it's a spider but its pretty cool. It almost glowed, even during the day, and was about as big as a large thumb nail.

 

I'd guess mine is about 1/3 that size.

 

Impressive, especially if she eats mice and pinkie mice...

 

Mice, lizards, birds, ... anything they can overpower.

 

Eff that. Get 6 more spiders.
