Mojave Rd is a great trip, done it twice now (3 days each time), so much to see out there.

Ok guys heres what i did, took the heads off my old tacoma to get rebuilt before we put them on my buddies 4 runner

Heres the problem, the 10mm bolt you put in the cam gears to keep the cams aligned bent under the torsion of the spring in there... is that going to be a major problem

Most definitely lol, both times we've gone the 3 days felt like we were rushing through. Had to be selective with what we stopped to look at, but we were doing the whole 150 mile stretch of the Mojave Rd both times. You can blast through it in a day but stopping to camp and sight see along the trail is the best way if at all possible.

There are tons of abandoned mining operations and homes/ranches from the early 20th century, couple old military forts along the way too. The salt flat/dry lake bed portion is definitely worth checking out as long as it hasn't rained recently. The lava tubes of course are really cool too, thats probably the most touristy landmark of the trail though since its closer to the highway. The mines and old homes/ranches are much more remote.

Sounds like an awesome trip, DVNP is something I haven't done yet and really want to. Definitely more scenic than Mojave. Joshua Tree is incredible, the best wheeling around there is on the outskirts of the park in the vast BLM land area

When you re-install the cams it should relieve enough pressure to get it out. I would not attempt to take it out before then

Oh man I have the issue with the "thud" when shifting up through 3rd and letting off the throttle at low speeds. Definitely thought I needed to replace the entire driveshaft or do some transmission work. Gonna try this out.

I love your front grill, did you custom cut the mesh with a toyota logo from another truck? Really reminds me of the old FJs.

Also finally got around to installing red LEDs in my "new" housing. I feel lucky that I got a truck with the door switch wiring included in my model, and that the old 4Runner dome lights fit in our trucks.

Had a couple spare parts laying around at work. Namely a festoon adapter that doesn't work in the 3rd gen trucks, some extra diode bridges so I don't have to guess on the bulb direction, and a few red LED boards.

Soldered up pretty quickly, if I were to do it right again I would probably make a custom board so I could be sure the components won't get over stressed.

Factory on left vs red board on right. So much brighter.

    Suuuper bright now.

Still retains the left and right light functions.

Can't wait to use it more.

Check your carrier bearing too...if it's bad or the bushing around it is torn up then it'll cause all kinds of clunky and vibrating driveshaft play

Not much of an excuse really, other than I wouldn't dare go there Spring - Summer due to the heat and when the cooler weather hits I usually head for the mountains and snow. It's definitely on the list though

We went in July. Wasn't too bad, I wouldn't chance any trail rides though. Hiking is be prepared.

Didn't get any pics as it wasn't all that exciting, but today I finally replaced my clunky poly bushings in the main eye mount of my passenger All Pro Expos.

For months it's made a lot of clunking noises unless I hose it down with dry lube spray. Surprisingly the bushings were intact, half expected them to be split in half due to the noise they were making.

Turns out the issue was the type of grease I was using. Back when I installed them with greasable bolts, I mistakenly assumed I could hit them with the same black moly grease I used on the driveline and they'd be fine. I slathered the new bushings in Energy Suspension ptfe silicone grease, installed them and the popping noise is gone completely.

Also finally tightened my loose ebrake cable using the method in this link

We might have some white LED boards at work... ;)

I'll definitely look into that. I'll check for some other posts on how to do it and see what's in my FSM.

Nothing written up yet but I could do that soon. I found the mirror assembly on Ebay but I assume it's this one: https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toyota~mirror~assy~inner~rear~view~87810-89141-s7.html The LED boards are from our map boards for 3rd gen Tacomas at work. It's a pretty standard array of 5050 LEDs. The bulb adapter is custom designed by us as well.

I would make a custom fit board but China is on vacation so none of the PCB factories are open.

3m silicone paste works as well. I got a bottle of it years ago and works well for anything petroleum products will destroy.

Also what bushings did you use? I'm needing to replace mine but I'm remembering only allpro bushings work?

I used the Daystar greasable poly bushings/bolt kit, they fit the Expos
