I'm just gonna pull the new housing though as I pull the old one out by taping them together. Worst case, my bike shop is literally around the corner, so I can just take it in in pieces and say "I dun goofed". Ty will roll his eyes and fix it for me in like 5 mins.

The upside of going to the quiet shop instead of the 2 bigger ones down the street from me is I get stuff done a lot quicker.

Always buy the tool... though that doesn't necessarily mean you won't also give the LBS some moolah... the two are not mutually exclusive. One must be smarter than the tools he is working with.

The taping method is what flashed in my mind, the second I completely pulled out the old one

My LBS is a Trek shop thats a couple miles from the house. They don't give me huge price breaks, but I enjoy BSing with the guys and they always drop what their doing when I come. It cost me $25 to remedy my flub, but I was in and out in 10min.

I think the trick is to insert a bit of shifter cable or solid core wire into the cable housings to keep the ends perfectly aligned and then tape them up. That way they won't kink at the intersection. Also push the old housing out with the new rather than pulling so that they want to stay together. Of course all this will go out the window once as soon as you hit the first corner or tight spot. Good luck!

May as well just use the cable since it has to get threaded through anyways and you KNOW it's gonna kink at the BB.

I bought the tool. $35 for a rediculous overpriced set of wire cutters, but at least the park ones had a crimper unlike the pedro's model.

True... but you can't kill those things. I think my pair are well over 10 years old and still cutting like new.

I love how Washington just gets down with the gloomy weather unlike so many places. I wish we had an event like that here in Utah. as much as I don't enjoy road biking, cyclocross was a super fun time any chance I played along
