    Correct

The snatch block has the metal wire cable running around the sheave/roller. When you have that metal on metal with the forces, a stray wire or just the cable itself will create wear on the surface that started out smooth. That's fine when you continue to use it with metal cable. But if you use that same snatch block with synthetic line, those small cuts/grooves/wear can easily cut strands of the synthetic line as it rolls across it under load.

The same goes for if you plan to switch a cable winch to running synthetic line, to do that you should replace the drum that the line rolls onto as well as the hawse fairlead (a roller for cable) and you'd want to also sand down the sides of the winch body if it has any marks from rubbing from the cable. In the end, probably easier at that point to just get a new winch. (Line plus roller plus fairlead plus time to uninstall and rebuild will be close to cost of new).

For fun example, this thing was rocking with the wind, wanted to go over. Can't remember the angle it was sitting at but pretty sure it was in the mid 40 degrees. This is also a perfect example of... As soon as you get stuck STOP and assess. Look and think before you get yourself in deeper.

Two winches, snatch blocks, chain, straps, and the rocks to slow it from dragging my truck too much but we got it back on trail without issue. I was strapped to it, and my winch went uphill, snatched off a tree then to the frame on his passenger side to keep it from rolling down the hill.

While pictures speak 1K words, they don't always tell the whole story or depict the true nature of an event. Trails looks hella mellow there. What happened? To busy enjoying the view?

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
That’s a proper recovery right there. Although at first appearance it looks like you guys are standing right inside the ‘triangle of death’ but I am sure that your on the other side of the line.

I will add one thing, get something heavy to throw over the cable should it decide to snap. I was in a truggy that got slammed by a snapping cable. That shit sounded crazy dangerous.

x2 with Jonny, how did this little incident happen, looks like a flat road.

Oh yeah, nobody is ever allowed anywhere in the danger zone while anything is moving! Pics were setting up the rigging.

He was driving with his family, looked down to turn up the heat and dropped a wheel. He tried to drive back on trail under his own power. Forest service came up and drove them down, we came back to do the recovery the next day. He put the yellow strap on before he left... if he wouldn't have done that it wouldve been a goner.

And yeah, something on the lines is a good practice. Which I never really picked up on since I had synthetic... which can still do plenty of damage and you should. But nothing compared to cable.

He dropped the tire midway between my taco and his rig. Would've been possibly self recoverable if he would've stopped and not tried to self recover and then drop two tires... and slide.

Glad it was a solid recovery.

Going through the ole google drive... heres a bunch of recovery pics/vids. I dont have most of them, but some fun ones.

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/bwm8iovSQFyqv8eJ6

The bigger recoveries were what is now Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery, a non profit that helps people out of dumb situations but do some awesome recoveries. The ones I was on was when it was a small group, now its huge and ... political.

gotttttt itttt I interpreted it as don’t use snatch blocks with syn line and was like uhhh wtf I did that this past weekend. I’m smelling what you’re selling!

Had To save this gladiator this weekend and got to use my snatch block for the first time. Didn’t wanna pull parallel to the trail as the ditch she slid in got deeper and deeper. So found a tree perpendicular to her truck and ran my snatch block to it. Worked out great

But it's a Jeep.. they can't get stuck. :goingcrazy:

But those hooks on the bumper work really well when a Jeep rear ends another one at slow speed... And they hook onto an aftermarket bumper. That was a 25 minute clusterfuck to get them unhooked.

And they ride.. just like a Jeep/tractor. Freedom panels have nowhere to go unless you just sit them in the back seat to rub together. But people still like looking and pointing at them like they are something special. To each their own.

I greatly enjoyed my Jeep when I had one. But there's a reason why I didn't buy a second one.

Anybody down for another TW March camping trip? Or one in the next few months? Not necessarily February because I’m traveling like all month.....

Just trying to gauge interest and go from there, it’s been a while since our last one anyways

They are capable with nice approach and departure angles, ability for large tires with minimal mods and plentiful aftermarket. But usually it's the driver limiting most vehicles off-road.

Could be, I'll likely be gone the end of March though which would probably be a great time to camp.
