Most dealers will wave the diagnostic fee if the truck actually presents an issue. I would go back to them as see if they are willing to do that. If not, like we say around here, F em, and find another dealer.

As I understand it Toyota corporate covers everything so they are completely covered cost wise, right? Ya.. I never go to this dealer for this exact reason. Trying to nickel and dime every step of the way when I have had to go in there in the past.

Is this an issue that needs to be fixed ASAP or can I get away with driving a couple weeks before I can get into a shop?

My understanding is that it could put you in limp home mode which can be a safety issue if it happens at an inopportune time.....

I have read about that. No limp mode for me yet. Actually I just went for lunch and the lights are now off, although I did scan and get the codes this morning.

Was it a pending code? They can come and go but usually are a precursor to throwing a "full" code. Mine pending code came and went periodically but when it became a more frequent occurrence, I called the dealer. Maybe I got really lucky but at the end of the day, the way my case was handled should be the way all cases are handled....
Prior to having my SAI replaced, I purchased an Ultragauge. In the event that it threw the dreaded coded and went into limp mode, I might be able to cancel the code out and resume normal driving for a short time. I'm glad I didn't have to resort to that....

The dealer here in town confirmed it was covered under an extended warrantee but they want 140 bucks to diagnose it themselves. Just going to try to avoid paying 140 for a 2 minute diagnostic is all.

I’ve not heard of a Diagnostic Fee if the work is “Preformed Under Warranty”.

I have heard of a Diagnostic Fee being charged if the problem is found and is NOT covered under warranty.

I haven’t had Warranty Work done in a long time. So maybe this is a new “thing”?
Either way, sounds funny to me.

Ive only heard of a diagnostic fee applied if you decline to have the repair done. Its basically to prevent owners from getting the problem diagnosed then taking it somewhere else for the actual repair or DIY.

When I had my 2012 secondary air pump fail I already had the code showing up on my Scan Guage. Showed up at the dealer and told them the problem and the code it was throwing. Everything was fixed on Toyota's dime under the extended warranty for the Secondary Air Pump.

Glad you had a good experience at the dealer CH. I had same yesterday. Maybe just maybe they are beginning to understand the connection between the repair shop and new car/used car sales... naw

Recently had this same problem on my girlfriends 2012. Toyota covered the substantial parts bill and charged about 400$ in labor. They did not initially offer to cover anything until i mentioned that others were receiving help from toyota.

Hmmm I thought it was supposed to be covered completely. Also, I read on a Toyota corporate site that it’s only a 1 hour job.

I was thinking the same thing. What are their labor rates?

If this is covered like the others posted I'd go above the stealership to get the $400 back - sounds like a pure ripoff.

There is an extended warranted program regarding this exact issue. Program states it should be covered free of charge and take one hour.
It seems some dealers are trying to get extra money out of these warrantee jobs.
