Perhaps I don’t know how to use the search here, but I did try on both these topics and found nothing. So I have to ask:

1.) When do you all start your major mods. I have been doing bling mods on my almost one month old but worry about doing anything major and voiding out the warranty. Even something like doing the grill swap. Is this a legitimate concern?

2.) I’m all three of my previous trucks I’ve burned nothing but regular 87 unleaded gas. What do you all burn in these newer Tacoma’s, still plain old regular? I have been using the middle grade were premium but wonder if I am just being crazy.

Throwing this out there. Thanks in advance.

Mods depend on your use of the truck. Keep in mind, mods won't void the whole warranty. Say you put a lift on it and your radio dies. Your radio will still be covered. Grille swap will not void warranty, however, it may or may not cause a calibration issue with the sensor.
Also, before doing any electrical mods, disconnect the battery first.

As for gas, I just use 87. No issues with it for me.

I do mods after warranty is up. Why poke at something with a warranty? I bought a truck that works for me from stock though.

Do what the owners manual calls for. It's 87. Anything higher is wasting money on these NA trucks. On the ranger, sure. Tacoma? Wasting the money.

I don’t fuck around. I started the day I brought it home.

I haven’t done any powertrain mods so I wasn’t concerned by that.

    Not crazy, just uneducated.
You stock ECU tables for ignition advances are set for 87. Some folks will tell you stories, but those just a story...

If your going to upgrade the suspension, add electronics or chop, there really is no time like the present. For grills and other cosmetics, they are not under warranty likely anyway. And you don’t void your warranty with a performance part, they won’t cover that part.
Running 87 is correct until you add a supercharger.

Looks good man. I am liking the stance. That’s sort of what I’m looking for. Except mine is a LB

I drove my 2020 home and put it on jack stands immediately putting on Kings, Dakar’s in the rear, wheels, tires, swapped the grill, add a DMM, added a home link mirror, installed factory bed lights, interior leds, rigid SAE fog lights, etc. in other words, I didn’t wait at all. I do have a couple pretty awesome dealers that aren’t far away that don’t care about the modifications. In fact they both have brand new lifted Tundras, Tacoma’s, rav4s, 4Runners, Sequoias, and Highlanders on the lot and both offer lift/wheels/tires packages you can add to any vehicle at the time of purchase. I’m not too worried about the warranty. However, I also understand that if I screw something up due to my mods, that’s on me.

As for fuel, I usually run the clear gas, which around here it’s 88 octane. If I end up at a station without clear, I usually use premium (91) because it’s only $.10 more a gallon, <$2.00 total for a full tank, and I’m usually filling dirt bikes or our rzrs at the same time and they only get premium. You won’t get any benefit running anything higher than what’s required for your truck (87).

I started buying parts before I bought my truck. I had ordered a Cav Blue SR5 and 8 weeks later I hadn't received it so I ended up buying a TRD OFF ROAD DCLB in MGM. All the parts I bought were blue so I said Hell with it and ran with them. I have a SSO Slimline bumper that is at the paint shop right now. It also will be blue.20190414_120230.jpg 20190414_120230.jpg 20190508_172803.jpg

The looks pretty good - with the blue! Something different.

I just did the glove box and door sills thing yesterday :D . Did stainless tailgate inserts a couple weeks ago.

I don’t plan to do any mechanical mods to mine, just a few appearance things. I use 87 but only pure dinosaur juice, no corn gas.

When you do mods is directly related to how you'd feel getting a warranty claim denied on something in the area of what you changed. People will tell you all kinds of stories about what the dealer will/won't, can/can't deny and what you can do about it but none of those people will be there when the dealer tells you to stick it. It's your money, gamble accordingly.

Some people go nuts the moment they bring it home. I don't shade them, you do what you want to your truck, it's not my money so I don't have a voice in it. If they bought something they love and want to build the hell out of it, more power to them, that's awesome. I have had enough built and modded to hell vehicles, this was a calculated purchase to minimize things I'd even want to change so I could finally enjoy something that's unmolested. I still have other things to play with if the mood moves me.

I've done a few tiny things with toyota parts but that'll be it until the warranty is up. Part of why I chose this truck is because there were toyota accessories/parts for other models that I could use to tie up the couple of loose ends and they can be found online for cheap. Bed lights, skid, exhaust, pro taillights because the stock chrome were horribly ugly, etc. I know Meso will be getting a lot of my money when the interior chrome delete stuff starts being released.

Edit: 87 octane for sure. Anyone who preaches otherwise either has something wrong with their truck or their head. It's very basic, the compression ratio and ecm timing maps are for 87. If you are willing/able to spend the cash for premium but see there's no net benefit, run E0/non ethanol. Yes the truck can run up to e15 but it's just nasty stuff. Small engine carbs will demonstrate that very quickly. I just ended 9 years of 93 octane vehicles, I'm loving the cheaper 87 at the moment. 31mpg on 93 costs the same as 24mpg on 87, so I took a 4mpg hit to daily drive the truck. Not so bad.
