I think the stock needle bearing is crap on the 3rd gens. I had Toyota replace mine (2nd one) even with SPC UCAs. A week after the new one, it went out and I only had 2” of lift. When I tore out the bearing I found one of the “needles” in the diff oil. The ECGS is really a good part that will last over longer time with way more abuse

The immense weight people add via aggressive mud/offroad tires and heavy wheels during lifts contributes to this excessive wear, combined with incorrect alignments

its a cocktail of bad mistakes that waste the bearings, not saying the bearing isnt a point of failure though.

The ecgs is like a 60 dollar part, id reccomend it. The uca's u can hold off on if you go to the zero notch Many many people have been doing that for a long time with no issues.

Best bet is to read and read you will learn so much. You will also learn some people have their own preferences and preach it as gospel.

Agreed. Which is why I will NEVER go with anything wider than 265.

255/75/17 is my favorite size and is ideal with the 4.88’s. 265/75/16 is my other set

Also if you wanna make your truck look better and a lil higher I'd look into either 265 75 16 or 255 85 16 tires. Get rid of the junk oem tires they give us

Agreed I'll never jump on the 285 band wagon. Next time around I'll prob go 255 85 16/255 80

wrong. get on the correct lower clip and then get UCAS First chance you get.
-You can be 100% certain that the excessive stress on the carrier will cease after temporarily lowering back down to the low clips.
-UCA's are the only thing that TRULY fixes this.
-Why replace a bearing that is just going to go right back to being abused by an incorrectly configured suspension? you would just get in a loop of blowing out bearings

Dont choose something because its cheap, the problem cant be hand-waived away. you had it right here
this is the best solution, that saves you immense amounts of stress and money down the road. once you get UCA's id bet my lunch you never wear that bearing out, even after going back up a few notches

It is INDEED a bandwagon. There is a reason the military and all those awesome offroad rigs in Africa and Australia run skinner offroad tires

I don't get the obsession with people shoving the biggest tire possible on their trucks. Kills the mpg and alot of times doesn't even look the best.

Imo the tire well is not the right size for a 285, unless adding a big lift. It takes up too much space. I prefer the look of a 255 or 265 with a few in of lift. And it doesn't add the unnecessary weight

I looked at alot of pictures and I felt like the 2 in lift with 285s was the look I wanted. This us why I'm at the place I am.... other than the lift being installed wrong lol

E-rated tires are full retard, pants on head stupid. I can think of nothing that wrecks a Tacoma's driveline worse than E-rated tires. The increase in unsprung-weight is horrifying at the edge of the wheel, all just to have bfg-ko2's without 17" wheels.
