The thread I was directed to by HB Murphy is where I got the part numbers to order from Toyota... there are 3+ threads on this breather mod, so be sure to read them all and decide which you like best.

If it's already done, why ask now? I researched all the available threads on this easy mod. and picked one that was super easy... brought it into the side storage box in the bed... see photos, link in my sig.

I think the gas cap is about the best place. Any higher and it would just be a pain to route it.

I think it's worth asking. Perhaps there's a place where it sucks in cleaner air, or maybe there's a chance that mud can get in there if you were to select a certain location, etc.

Mine works great... been to Baja, lots of dust, breather clean, and no way can gasoline splashing get into the breather where I put mine!

I really want to do this mod but I'm concerned that the achilles heel to it is that rubber hose. Has anybody had any issues with the hose failing? I'm afraid of it getting a hole by rubbing or getting punctured... obviously if the hose gets compromised there is nothing stopping moister from getting into the diff.

    Am I being over paranoid?

    1. If you get the hose described in the original post, it comes with a 1 year warranty (not that I think you need it)
    2. It depends on your mounting. Don't make the tube too short and fasten it down to prevent rubbing on sharp objects.

I'd imagine it would be one of the last things to fail over the life of the truck.

Toyota uses a rubber hose on the other breathers on the truck... If they bothered to extend the rear breather the same way, it would be the same as we have done... Leave slack to allow for suspetion travel, and there should be 0 issues if done the way we have.

That could surely be built for less than $20. I'm trying to remember where I saw those bellows.

Does it have any fresh air relief valve... (to allow clean air in during a vacuum)...?

If hot gear gasses just fill into that, then they would return back in during cooling times... keeping it a closed system. Is that okay?

It looks like plastic... on top of the rear diff. there couild be rocks flying, sticks, cactus, ??? Can you see what a big rip in that thing would do as far as contaminating the rear diff.?

The breather that Toyota puts on the rear diff. is a one way check valve... allows gasses to get out, but nothing back in... eventually a vacuum will cause air/ mud/ water to get in past the axle seals.

The breather Toyota puts on the front diff., on an extended tube up high, is a two way breather. Hot gases out, clean air in, no vacuum created in the diff. This is what we (most of us) have used on the end of of the tube we installed off the rear diff.

How is a closed or 'vent out only' breather as good as or better than a two way breather?
