TEC || Winter Wheeling With Friends 25-26 Jan 2020

I winched my own truck out 3 times all day Saturday (but also bunch of others too) so its not like we all just pulled ourselves through the trail. It wasn't 9hrs of straight winching but yes there was ALOT of winching over that time... it was just spread out over a lot of vehicles. There was one annoyingly incapable vehicle in the front that cost the whole group literally a 2-3 extra hours or more and it had a winch which proves the winch does not forgive all sins.

People "rely" on their winch just like you rely on your 4wheel drive, bigger tires, skids, sliders, lockers, lift, tow straps, traction boards, etc, etc to get you though stuff you couldn't if you were running stock. You don't seem to worry about any of those things doing "all the work" and you acknowledge that recovery is a fun and interesting part of wheeling. Not sure why you single out the winch as that tool in your trail toolbox that you wanna go without... maybe it feels different when you typically use it last?

Seriously they aren't that expensive (my half the price of a warn shittybilt ran like a champ all day with some tough pulls) and they are a game changer if you are in terrain that requires it. There is alot of great wheeling to be found after that first winch point...you should get one.

 

I think I know which vehicle you’re talking about. That sucks, kinda happy I went to the other trails and played around, but on the other hand, it seems like I missed a shit ton of fun. Mind you, parking lot serpentine belt changes are awesome.....

Hearing about Ray's place, and the fact that those were the "easy" trails really puts into perspective on how much more difficult offroading in the snow is than i originally thought it would be. Seeing the Aussie guys run through mountains, i thought - pfft it cant be that difficult, snow is easy to drive on...

Boy, you guys proved that wrong.

I'm glad i decided to stay back as it would have been, not necissarily a detriment, less ideal since there was a lot on everyone's plate through the constant winch fest for vehicles less capable..

 

my winch and the winch on the 4runner behind me saved my rear quarter from looking like @tgelata 's. i saw (and heard) him smack the tree on a corner so i took it literally 4ft wider and still slid into it. we had one line with a snatch block on it pulling the bed side away from the tree and the other pulled the truck forward clear of the tree. not even 2 minutes before that I said to Jill wow these trails are tight, if you ran them enough you would hit something for sure...

Will WWWF2021 have a winch and exo-cage as required gear? Give those poor trees a rest from all the body work they’ve been performing.

 

Similiar thing happened to me, slid into this tree. No winch behind me so had to winch forward and pivot off the tree. Cap survived thankfully. The burch was on the cap, and the others were close to the door. Was lovey.

 

Think winch....the trail isn’t too crazy, evgeny and I ran it in 2 hours in better conditions. But everyone having a winch is a good idea.

 

wow different corner but exactly the same situation. the off camber corner made it seem like the tree had a tractor beam on you.

 

I tried to take it wide but no bueno. Was slightly uphill so meh. I was breaking trail which didn’t help. After I got through @Atlas86 just drove it no problem. Maybe it was driver error lol

We were hoping to sell tickets during the dinner, but with how late it was and the repair to @Manfred truck we left as we had the drive home. Also, I was under the impression a lot of people placed out after they left?

Yeah, organizing wise it was a mess in my books. But I got an idea what's going on, next time it'll be in a firmer hands

 

Yeah. We weren’t informed on a lot of things, but know that we have an idea of how it all works at Rays we could definitely do it much smoother. Also ensure people are better prepared.

I in no way think a winch is a bad thing. I will join winch team eventually. I was planning this winter, almost bought it 2 weeks ago

Then realized I need to put my bluesea fuse box up front on a shelf and get wiring installed. It came to stop there as I got over whelmed.

 

Dont those 3rd gens have a fancy inclinometer on them!? Wheres that picture haha

Oh the snow conditions were garbage. Like I said, that section took 15 minutes when we did it with @Norilsk a few weeks prior.
