I don't know too many people, but hoping to join a few events this year and put some faces to names. If you guys don't mind a newbie in the SEPA group, I'd like to tag along.

this is fast paced, not so much "offroading" as it is riding 45-50mph on maintained logging roads. doubtful you will even get into 4x4... there will be others with kids in tow...

The distance makes it a possibly very hard first trio for kids, but there will be kids of similar age along.

It really depends how well he does ridi5 14 hours.

He did alright on the way to outer banks, but that was aided with a portable DVD player, not so sure that will work on the logging roads. He rides well, but gets homesick after a day or two. That is really my worry. I try to keep an open mind when it comes to these types of trips and leave the option to him. I never want to leave him behind unless he chooses. I also recognize that at 4 he is very prone to change his mind half way. On a 3-4 hour trip not a biggie. Get to VT, NH differen't story. Maybe I can get a couple closer trips in as a litmus test. I want to check out FRO this year, but it is pretty far for me.

Good to know there will be other kids of the same age, that can make a huge difference.

Could also cut it short and do other stuff. It's memorial day weekend, coastal maine is going to be the center of the universe.

I'll count my doggo as a kid :)

I'm actually going to challenge and see how long I can make it in 2WD.

I don't think I am respecting the logging roads enough at this point. I wasn't thinking 4x4 would be necessary at all. Perhaps this should be done with my E-rated MT's. Even though they are pretty worn at this point, still better than my AT's.

Nah. An ok AT tire is fine. And you'll most likely not need 4wd.

A stock 2wd truck can complete this trip without issues.

For those who are out of state and haven't been up north. Under the Green line is civilization. The purple circle is town to pretty remote.

Above the yellow is the trip. There are no towns. There are town ships. People work there. Few folks have camps there. Depending on where you go, you might be 1 of 50 people in a 50x50mile square.

Use the scale at the bottom for an idea of distance you'll be covering.

It's not going to be like traveling to the OBX or upstate NY.

@SR-71A could probably explain the lay of the land a bit better being a local.

I'm just a consistent rental up there. :D

You're a little generous to the north with your green line there :p

Logging roads are used by big rigs constantly. There may be some fresher tracks, which would be rougher, but these are advertised camping sites - accessible via subaru, if you catch my drift. :)

I'll be in a stock 4x4 OR, I think the biggest "worry" is running out of gas.

I'm trying to decide whether to bring an additional spare, fuel will be a given for me. I spent a little time in some rough shale roads in arizona. After the 3 weeks we became like a nascar pit crew on that GSA van.

As far as where civilization starts or stop?

I feel like I was pretty close. I didn't even cheat and use a map. Haha

Stops. 5 miles off the seacoast north of Augusta is not much other than cows. :D

I'll probably ratchet strap my spare into my bed and bring a better lug wrench than the toyota roadside setup, and my hole patch stuff. I'm probably going to try to skate by with 5gal backup for fuel. And my farm jack but I don't have exposed jacking points. o_O

DOWNEAST is ANYTHING near the coast... from OOB-to-Machiasport. I dont count kennebunkport or kittery....

as far as gas goes I recommend bringing 5-10 gallons I filled up at Oxbow road campsite the night before we were out. I had a 1/4 tank left, and my fillup was in greenville before visiting the B-52 crashsite, and heading in.. I carry 2 jerry cans with as much gas as they will hold (about 12 gallons max). I had more than enough fuel to make it out to the Gas station just north of bangor, and fuel up before getting onto 295..
