Correct, i don't have the jbl package. If you have the jbl package and want to retain steering wheel controls, this would be the harness:
    https://www.amazon.com/Metra-TYTO-0...le=1&s=car&vehicleId=1&vehicleType=automotive

jbl package + no steering wheel controls:
    https://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-811...WC66FEFXEVH&psc=1&refRID=9Q59SY9HVWC66FEFXEVH

Thanks always for the help, DG and everyone else!

I only chose the XAV5000 because I have a Sony credit card with reward points so it was a freebie. The pic you posted of the Toyota to Pioneer harness doesn't have the correct Toyota connectors for the JBL factory harness. I know that the hard way as the first harness I bought claimed to be a universal Toyota connector but didn't match up to the factory JBL harness. Now I know the JBL stuff is unique, and maybe even unique to the 05-06 Tacomas as the later years look slightly different too.

So...I purchased another harness that was specific to the JBL Toyota. But it came with a whole bunch of different plugs that had me lost again. I started pulling shrink wrap and resoldering wires and then it dawned on me that it was a massive universal harness with ALL the plugs for ALL the years and I could and should have just plugged it in to the plugs on the factory dash harness and left all of the others unplugged...if it came with actual directions that told me that! At that point, though, it was too late, so I ended up frankensteining and cutting and re-soldering just the wires and connectors I thought I needed.

Here is what the harness I frankensteined from the two harnesses looks like:

    CLs_IOxwyaN8-ujhg0lWV-GUfzx8B5KilBYGvj-k_76d0bfa9b9307504fc93312242161148783d7d38.jpg

It was straight-forward enough for me to just rematch and solder the wires and cut out everything else until I go to the RCA cables. Both of the aftermarket harnesses I purchased came with red and white RCA cables that I guessed and added to the harness at the last minute (hence the electric tape and not heat shrink for those) trying to follow how they were wired in to both of the aftermarket harnesses I cut up. I figured these would magically make the factory amp and woofer work if plugged in to the RCA out ports, but they don't appear to do that and just cause interference.

With it all wired this way, the HU powers up, plays, but only on the left front speaker. The right side is wired as I feel it should be but doesn't work/play and that's a head scratcher. I read on an install thread here that the little box takes care of the rear speakers somehow (in addition to the steering wheel controls), but at this point, not able to find a pinout of the factory JBL harness anywhere online, I feel pretty lost and just re-installed the stock HU and am making the wifey wait :( I'm ready to just buy a Metra/Scosche harness if I can find one that will work without anymore guesswork and if anyone can post a link to a 2006 Tacoma JBL to Sony specific one that retains the factory amp/woofer and steering wheel controls, I would be very, very relieved!

That looks like the correct main connector. Thanks for posting. I'm putting this in my Amazon cart (but am now inspired to figure out what the heck I did wrong). Thanks!

Has anyone replaced their Inner CV Boots? Specifically the CVJ boot kit, extended red boots?

I'm struggling with the boot clamps for the larger side of the boot closest to the differential.

I understand now, it was a typo. It's a big no on filling over full which you already know.

When my youngest step son checked his 1st car's oil the first time it was slightly below the fill line. So he went to Walmart and looked up his Saturn's oil requirements to figure out how much oil he needed to buy. He put in 4 1/2 GALLONS of oil. He said that last 1/2 GALLON was difficult to get in as it took a long time for the new oil "to settle". The damn thing RAN!! Smoked and leaked like crazy though. LMAO!! All he had to do was ask me... Pep Boys told him he needed a new engine - due to hydro lock. I had a good time talking to the mechanic lmao. I paid for a oil change and the car didn't leak (more than normal) and it only smoked for a couple more hours.

When I was servicing Yamaha boats (4 stroke engines) the Yamaha dealer I worked for had me fill them at exactly 3/4 above the fill line and 1/4 below the full line. They told me it was for variances in oil temperatures when checking the oil levels. The engines were warmed up prior to draining the old oil and the new oil was at the outside temperature at the time of the oil change. I just did what I was told and didn't worry about it, lol.

Wow, I'm sorry you've experienced so much trouble with that. But you've got the fix figured out now thanks to
    @outxider (outxider you're awesome).

Out of 36 years of installing I only installed 1 aftermarket stereo into a 2nd gen. I'm retired/disabled now. I was in the insurance replacement part of the business and I typically didn't work on new versions of models (like the 2005 Tacoma) for 2-4 years after they were made as a lot of different things came into play before they got to me. Oddly, I had a brand new 2005 Tacoma as my work truck, I just never installed an aftermarket head unit in that truck. I did install a small bass tube, small amp, alarm system, power door locks, and a big inverter in it though. Neither of those two 2nd gens I worked on back then had the JBL system. I still haven't installed an aftermarket head unit in my current 2006 (lack of funds).

I believe the last owner already installed one (already had aftermarket HU with working steering controls). There's a black box with text that says "steering wheel control" with an auxiliary cable coming out of it. I plugged that into the "remote" port on the new head unit. I'll have to take another look tonight, hopefully I just messed something up and don't need to buy more parts
