    I purchased an aftermaket head unit a few years back (Pioneer AVH-X2700BS) for my 08 Tacoma with the JBL upgrade. I installed it myself and am more used to wiring a house than wiring car audio. I might use the wrong terminoligy, so bare with me. My problem is the quality of the music coming through the speakers. It seems like the levels aren't coming through correctly and when I turn up the volume to a high level, the clarity tanks and it seems like all power is coming out of the sub. I am not sure if this is an indication that I wired something wrong, my amp is going bad or something else. I am thinking it might be a crappy receiver but this is not my forte. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    I'd open up the harness and check all solders. If you used crimps it may be the issue. It's always my starting point.

    Also check the ground wire.

    To clarify;

    Did your truck come with the JBL system from the factory?

    I can guarantee you that your receiver is a quality piece. Pioneer is the only manufacturer to use MOSFET outputs on their receivers.

    I have no experience with the JBL system that's in some Tacomas.

    Did you have the steering wheel control module along with the wiring harness in order to retain the factory steering wheel controls and amp?

    Will do. I crimped the wires, but I will go back, recheck connections and solder them. Thanks for the starting off point.

    Yes to both. It came with the JBL system and I have the steering wheel control module.

    Did you have to mess with the amp and it's connections at all during the install?

    No I didn't. I only touched the wires behind the receiver and I don't recall any wires referring to the amp in the diagrams. It has been a while since I installed them, but I will verify tonight when I get off work.

    Another thing I forgot to mention is the subwoofer controls on the vehicle do not work. I can jack up the subwoofer all the way, or turn it all the way down and it makes no difference

    Do you have a set of spare speakers? Just to test if they are blown.

    I do not. I thought that but it seemed like it would have to be a big coincidence that it happened right when I got a new receiver. My initial thought is is if the receiver is good, then it's either the speakers or the amp. But there again, I really don't know what I'm talking about

    So everything was good. Then you replaced “only” the amp. Now it sounds like crap?

    I didn't think to verify that at time of purchase because I ordered the head unit and all the harnesses etc through crutchfield and that's the one they said was for my truck with jbl. Could that cause all the issues I am having? I thought it was just for the steering wheel controls?
