After 6,000 miles, the low oil message appeared on my brand new 2020 TRD OR. When I checked the oil, it barely registered on the dipstick (like maybe a drop). I just took it in for the initial service 2 weeks ago. An oil change isn’t part of this service, but I would have assumed they would have at least checked.

I know for a fact it is not leaking oil. There is no indication that I’ve been burning through the oil either.

Since this happened shortly after the initial service, the dealership agreed to come pick up the truck and check the engine.

After less than an hour of looking at the truck, the dealership said it was 1.5 quarts low on oil and that this would not have caused any damage to the engine.

    So here are my questions...

    1. Should I be concerned about the engine being damaged?
    2. How much oil needs to be in the engine to register on the “low” tick on the dipstick (and high for that matter)?
    3. Has anyone else had similar issues?
    4. If this was your truck, how would you handle this with the dealership?

Don’t know if your problem is the same, but this gentleman has/had the same issue as you.

I would ask the dealer for an extended warranty.

1.5 quarts low won't cause damage IMO. The engine uses an oil pump with a pickup near the bottom of the pan, and there's always a few quarts in the pan at all times even while its circulating. If there were a problem with not enough oil, the pressure would drop and throw the low oil pressure light.

In 6000 miles you finally decided to pop the hood?

Toyota service sucks, learn from this and do your own maintenance. Hope there is no damage to your motor. Good luck with it.

I agree. Your oil temp would have been higher than normal but no damage would have occurred. The oil life would be shortened in my opinion and I would replace it.

If even a little registered on the dipstick you’re fine. It’s a quart from low to high so still plenty of oil in the pan.

Are there separate sensors/warning lights for oil level and pressure?

    1. Your engine is fine hopefully if you dont climb hills or race it.
    2. Dont know, but i'm guessing 3 quart.
    3. Heard some people say their engine burns some oil. Mine burns about .5 quart for 10k miles. 3 oil change now and only doing them at 7k instead of 10k because of that.
    4. Tell them to document it. Tell them to give you a free oil change and do it properly. Check the oil mark every 2k. I know that most stealership lies and say you dont have a leak or nothing is wrong.

Toyota should give you a new truck, a new spare engine and unlimited lifetime warranty on everything you own.

Did it say low oil on the display, or did the oil symbol light up?

I saw that but he said "Low oil". There's two oil lights... one for level and one for pressure. If it were a pressure light, that would be more concerning, and I'd be raising hell with Toyota over it.

The low oil light is to let you know you need to add oil, not to let you know you just totaled your engine due to low oil.
