i'm not sure what you're getting at, but i think what you're saying is what i'm trying to do.

I was at work and made a quick and shitty sketch and not much detail to get an idea accross to @tacoma16 due to the Winter Winching With Friends 2020

    upload_2020-1-27_18-32-28.jpg
now that i'm home, made a new sketch but it's even more shittier but with more detail.

the idea is to have the plate (red) connect into the preset bumper winch bolt locations (yellow) and have the receiver (magenta) stick out a little past the bumper, depending on how much needs to get cut. and it wont stick out like a sore thumb since the license plate will hide it

with that set up, i'd be able to slide in the adapter that holds the winch like this guy (@llamasmurf posted there, so i assumed it's where he got his idea from :anonymous:) to either the front or rear of the truck. I can reach the pin from the 2 side holes that are meant to toss the clutch on or off for spooling.

I like the idea of having a removable winch though i feel like pushing the winch at least 12” out from the truck would put a ton more stress on the bumper/ frame. So possible problems there if there was a heavy winching situation. Not to mention our frames start out with shitty bumper mounts that need to be reinforced

I hear ya, it's like wheel base...less is more.

Both outer studs rusted off my front bumper attachment points. still have the inner 2 studs on each side and bolted at the bottom on each side. Still pretty solid, but I will weld in a new plate once spring comes.

Our frames have been known to bend even with all the bolts attached, I’d get that dealt with asap

Yeah the idea of a removable winch is quite convenient, but the goal of this wouldn't necessarily be for pulling my ass up Greens.
and it's not just for winch, could toss an apple at the front and push a trailer into place that might be awkward.

it's a good idea as i don't need to commit to the full weight of the winch into the truck for the rest of its life and could mount it when i can guess i would need it for.

    Just something to think about

i this passed weekend in particular there was a few times where vehicles were winched straight sideways as the front end had started to go down a hill or to avoid body damage

this guy was winched straight up a tree to repair a popped bead.

Every winch situation is different and not always just a straight forward pull

*edit* also you have to think of the forces involved in winching. Not just the weight of the truck but everything holding the truck back too. Same reason why your winch should be rated for 2x the weight of the vehicle its attached too

I think a straight pull would be fine but a side pull would put a lot more torque on the bumper/frame.

With a winch on a cradle, you can always just put it in the rear hitch receiver and go backwards.

I see it as much more versatile. As @tgelata said every situation is different. More options the better.
