    Most accidental car fires I respond to that are electrical start under the dash. Some are aftermarket unfused. However oil/gas on the manifolds are more common as the fuses do their jobs and we don’t get dispatched to fix fuses. The battery itself is the fuse for a primary short circuit. By the time we get there it has melted out the terminal post and usually the initial explosion actually vents the hydrogen before there is enough heat to ignite the engine bay. DC motors can and do quickly overheat but they should be protected for that. If Op wants to put a 400/500 amp fuse in, go for it. If not, just keep the hood shut as battery acid tastes worse than most hookers, so a friend told me.

    Just another reason why I advocate a fuse VS a disconnect. When electrical sh!t goes bad, it goes very bad very quick. I've have to force myself to pull a disconnect under a ground fault situation. It isn't a pretty place to be. Most people would tuck their tails and run.

    Most people don't. It is a hassle to plug / unplug every time you need it. Also, problems (if they occur) will most likely happen while your using it. Besides, if you do have a front-end collision, are you going to be able to get the disconnect apart?

    Putting aside the arguing, I have a similar question.

    I’m in the market for a winch. Will I be ok wiring up the winch directly to the battery without any of the aforementioned extra fuses, relays or breakers?

    *I currently have HIDs, Baja Design ditch lights, and a Baja Design light bar wired to the battery (all with relays/fuses).

    Tuned Fox 2.5 resi with dsc, JBA HD UCA, total chaos knuckle gussets, rear trd pro fox shocks, Deaver U402 stage 1 rear leafs, archive garage u bolt flip with fox 2.0 air bumps, White knuckle off road rock sliders, BAMF 1/4” steel skids, Magnaflow exhaust, Archive Garage Hammer Hangers, Cbi high clearance rear bumper, 285/75/16 tires.
    People make this shit so damn complicated, wire that fucker directly to the battery, get some high heat electrical loom or rubber hose split down the center and put that over the power wire and if you’re paranoid wrap it fully in high quality electrical tape and call it a day. Make sure it can’t chafe like someone already mentioned. DONE.
