If you are aware of it, then the situation can be avoided. Again with the option of using the rear pull instead of forward.

No mud flaps, and a cool sticker.
When you guys are using your winches, do you ever use pulleys to change the direction of the pull? Ive never had to pull a truck, but I've extracted my fair share of white water canoes/rafts/kayaks and pull enough stuff up while rock climbing to know directional pulleys can help when you cant pull straight. In all the videos ive seen of winching, ive never seen anyone set up a pulley to "fix" bad angles.

It happens more often than you think.
    Called a snatch block
Can also use it to double your pulling power
    Very very useful

Used it a bunch. Great for changing the direction and strengthening the pull.

used a pulley to winch @Manfred off of a tree. My front end was 90 degrees to his driver side of the truck. Pulley changed the direction. Also if you can't do a snatch because you can’t drive forward you can winch someone forward who is behind you. That’s just this weekend. Lol

I’m gonna chime in on permanent vs removeable winch. My particular uses, are leading me towards a removeable winch cradle.

98/100 of my outings are solo runs, just a ways off the beaten path. Usually dipping down a “No Exit” or “No Winter” road and being able to winch myself backwards (even a few feet) would outweigh the benefits of not having to install a 100 lbs winch cradle whilst in a shitty situation. (Wonder how many times my back could do that....hmmm).

In the past few years I got stuck once where a winch woulda saved so much time and effort, but I self extracted with a hi-lift and strap all the same. Woulda hooked the winch to the same tree even. Time is all I would have saved, on this particular stucking.

Since most of my wheeling is exploring, with a trip to Ardbeg almost annually, there’s no need to lug around my winch and gear 95% of the time.

Also, being on a cradle means I can wire up BOTH my trucks and have 2 “winch ready” trucks for a lot cheaper.

Also bumpers can be designed a lot smaller if they don’t have to conceal a winch. Just tie in a receiver to the frame somehow.

Also think less maintenance being stored inside and not catching every bit of road debris. It should always look as good as when it was last used.

Somebody said “the extra stress hanging the winch another foot forward”....but compare to the extra stresses of carrying that winch 24/7...heavier springs, tie rods,UCA/ LCA, gussetting... nobody (perhaps our friends to the south) does that much reinforcement to put a fat chick on the bumper temporarily...but if said fatty was a hood ornament makes sence to gusset some weak points.. Point is, the strock front end with exception to the bumper extensions/frame mounting should take the extra while winched, and benefit from not always carrying that extra weight.

Have to design a bed mount so that it doesn’t become a 100lbs unrestrained weapon in the bed.

I think this setup will work best for me, but prolly a couple years away while I work towards “using my trucks and getting stuck” more. Hi-lift, straps and traction boards packed up in the meantime.

That is a great way to maximize the investment in 1 winch.

I am big on the idea of it sitting in my basement in perfect condition all the time, until I want to use it. No UV rays degrading the synthetic line. No salt destroying every single component of it.

Its not the extra weight of the winch on the front end I’d be worried about its the actual stresses of winching on the frame itself. Our frames weren't designed to be pulled by the stock bumper mounts hence the mounts only being 1/8” thick

i dont see a problem with designing a bumper with a receiver that would keep the winch as close to the truck as possible. But building a plate to extend the winch at least 12” passed the “normal” mounting location would put a huge strain on the frame. Thats 12” more leverage of possibly 10,000 LBS on the weak point

if your really that concerned about winching backwards you could always use the 3 snatch block method

but at the end of the day its your rig you can do whatever you want

With a winch on a cradle, you can always just put it in the rear hitch receiver and go backwards.

I see it as much more versatile. As @tgelata said every situation is different. More options the better.

Just make sure when building you try the mount in the rear hitch.
Was stuck in my dodge and when I tried to relocate the winch to the rear I found out the winch body hit the bumper before i could put the pin in....

Ill try to get a pic..

what he said^^. i find my winch line is at a serious angle from the truck ALOT whether its to change the direction of the truck (lots of that in the snow this past weekend) or to use the only available winch point and adding that 12" lever seems no bueno. throwing a couple more snatch blocks and tree straps in the bag seems easy.

all the debate about whether a winch is even needed and now you guys need front AND rear? we must have been pretty persuasive.

You are not persuading anyone, I have had this plan all along. I have just had other things to blow cashola on :p

If snatch blocks can change the angle so perfecly, why is it a big deal to not pull straight? Snatch blocks, and bam you are pulling straight. But I will say it again, rear pull can just get you back to position to try the obstacle again with out winching forward.

    *Edit*
Honestly you guys telling me with such enthusiasm that its required to have a winch to snow wheel, or wheel in general. Has kind of killed the want for it. I hate being told what to do.:notsure:

I just brought to light the versatility of it. since i don't intend to fit one permanently into my bumper any time soon, i was thinking of just building a removable 2" reciver bracket that fits into the slot of where the winch would go inside the bumper so i could also stuff an apple into it and pull rear-wards or something

This is all hypothetical theorycrafting to me.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

for exactly the reasons i said... sometimes you don't want to (so as to change the direction of the truck) and sometimes you can't (no available winch point).

remember a snatch block needs an available winch point too.

Edit; adding you to the list since we both said the same thing at the same time
Being in Canada this is less of an issue but, the folks down south that run dunes or beach runs might not have 15 trees to snatch block off of.
    example;
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8trkgFX6wI

these guys had quite literally a single tree to winch off of, and even that was sketchy. But again, the chances of this situation is almost 0% up here in the north.

the versatility of a removable winch is not just that it's on your truck, it's that it can be used anywhere where you might need it.
In my case i have a trailer mounted 30,000lb winch and almost uprooted a few trees pulling stuff around. But if i didn't have the winch trailer, i might have been able to move the camper trailer into its final position by the use the moveable winch since sometimes the truck can't get to where i want to winch
    IMG_20190518_185658.jpg

but yes, snatch blocks are a god send
    IMG_20190518_183334.jpg
    IMG_20190518_191051.jpg

    Again, all theorycrafting :D

I must admit i Have had front mount winches on many of my jeeps and trucks over the years I am waiting for my new bumper right now for my 2020 pro. I already have the winch and will be installing next month. But i do like the idea of having a winch on both ends of the truck But in heavy deep mud it will suck setting all that up.
To be honest i really have not used my winch often over the years and as i get older i do less and less heavy off road But that 1 time you need it it sure is nice to have.
On a side note does anyone Know if you can Flat tow a Tacoma behind a motor home
