I bought an engine from Yota 1 as well. It has leaked oil from the timing chain cover since day one. I need to pull it and put all new gaskets but I have been too lazy. Solid engine with the exact same build as yours.

Good luck on the second go around.

damn man that sucks. i honestly didn't really get to run my engine enough to find any other leaks. my engine ran pretty solid minus the leaking oil from the head lol

i got the engine stuffed and trans mated up w/ cross member installed on Sunday. next weekend ill Finnish it up.

had a hell of a time getting the damn torque converter seated all the way since it slid off as i was trying to man handle that tranny by myself...but damn when it seated there was no questions it was seated....than it seated again deeper!!! lmao triple seat'er i guess.

whats the deal with the coolant sensors? theirs on in the back where the EGR stuff is and one up front at the upper radiator hose. why 2? which one goes to the gauge and where does the other send temp data to?

P.s do yourselves a favor if you ever need to pull the auto tranny.....remove those damn trans cooler lines from the tranny they’ll just get mangled anyway and your not saving yourself any work at all, in fact making it harder.

Dear lord Jesus was it easy once that shit was off.

Photos taken before messing with the torque converter and pulling the trans cooler lines.

Funny now that I have reread my emails and he said the same thing about the chain tensioner leaking.
Mine has been leaking up around the Cylinder One since new. Makes me wonder a little bit.

What do you mean? Same thing about chain tensioner leaking?

Has yours been leaking from the head gasket at cylinder 1? Exhaust or intake side?

    [IMG]Cyl 1 Oil Leak

I am just assuming it was leaking behind the timing chain cover in that vacinity.

Anyone have installation instructions for this oil filter adapter union? The FSM doesn’t have any and neither do any of the guys at my local Toyota

after getting the engine and trans stabbed in last weekend i left everything un-torqued and came back by today.

on the way over i picked up my oil union and power steering pulley i had ordered last weekend from Toyota and had a late start at around 1pm

got the trans bell housing torqued
the engine mounts, the trans cross member torqued

un-bagged my wiring harness and snaked that rats nest out and finagled the transmission portion of it down and got it all connected with the trans and bolted up the harness brackets

bolted the drive plate up to the torque converter and installed the cover plate

installed the drive line and torqued that all up to spec

installed the starter and connected the battery wiring harness up to it and mounted the harness brackets back on the engine mount.

hoked up the ground wire to the block and the other one from the fire wall to the head.

    what else...

got the dip stick tubes in and bolted up, that's about it i think.

going to try and get started earlier tomorrow and Finnish everything up. i need to go to harbor freight and get some one time use tools, i don't have a hex socket set big enough to install that oil union and i need a set of crows feet to get torque on the double cardan joint.

i doubt ill get to starting it tomorrow. ill probably fire it up Friday

hope you all are having a good weekend too!

well i got her all juiced up and started her. everything went great. than came back the next day to drive a bit and get some gas in the tank.

it started to make what i first thought was an exhaust leak noise...but my gut feeling was it may be engine knock because it only does it when the engine in under load.

all my buddies think its an exhaust leak from the video posted below, and i do agree it sounds exactly like what i always heard in the past for exhaust leaks.

but my engine builder thinks its knocking.....(he hasnt seen the video, i just messaged him the circumstances and how it sounds good in neutral.

i did have old ass gas in the tank on super empty, but i filled half tank of 91 just before i parked it for the day since i didn't want to damage anything if it were knocking.

anyway what do you guys think about the noise? at the end you can hear it real good when i put the phone to the floor board.

ill be playing with it some more this weekend maybe...(i did promise the wife a day off from the kids since iv been working on this engine the last 3 weekends) well see i guess.

anyway ill get it ironed out i'm not worried. so far no leaks at all! so that's good

Hard to say whether it's exhaust or actual knock. I've had so many exhaust leaks on my 3rz and they all sounded different. One was from the inlet flange to the cat, another from the EGR tube connection on the exhaust mani, and another at the collector flange on the exhaust mani.

Did you put all new exhaust gaskets at those points?

I did have to re-use the gasket to the cat inlet. No one in town had one in stock so it’ll be at the dealer today or tomorrow. I’ll pick it up Saturday and put it in.

I looked down there and checked but it looked/sounded good at idle but that doesn’t mean much since I’m not hearing it at idle

Iv never had a leak that you couldn’t hear or feel at idle though so I’m skeptical but also hopeful that it’s something simple like an exhaust leak.

Praying to god I didn’t spin a rod bearing on first start and get some rod knock. I’ve had way to many problems with this new motor

The one I had recently, I wasn't able to hear at idle at all which was frustrating to diagnose. It was only under load. It ended up being one of the 3 bolts that mounts the down-pipe to the exhaust mani was loose.

I was able to pinpoint it with a piece of fuel hose put in one ear and probing around with the other end trying to find exhaust leaks. I had someone else rev the engine to try and get it to replicate the noise.

I hope your luck changes! The 3rz is a great motor. Hopefully your engine builder stands by his work if it does end up being something internal to the motor.

not only can i not hear it at idle but i can also rev the engine in park or neutral and it sounds fine....that makes me hopeful its not a rod knock, maybe detonation or ping but hopefully just an exhaust leak.

Yea my money's on an exhaust leak.

If you can hear it at idle, it should be pretty straightforward to track down.

Keep us posted on what you find.

No I cannot hear it at idle or when I rev it to 4K in park or neutral.

It is only heard when driving and pressing on the gas

Definitely will I’ll mess with it this weekend again.

I’m going to go through the exhaust completely.

Does anyone know how you can tell if your catalytic converter is clogged? Can you see light through the honeycomb or should I shoot some compressed air through and see if it exits?

    Stout890,
If you are near any long freeway uphill grades, go at a desired speed, and punch it... once your auto trans feels the weight, downshifts and is really pulling hard, you'll hear the difference in the exhaust leak.

    Good luck.

How's it coming? Did you figure out what the noise was?
