I just did a 260mile trip. All secondary style highways, with about half of it in very hilly terrain. Plus, l had to hammer it on numerous occasions to pass slower trucks etc.

l worked out my mileage at 19.943mpg

2014 DCSB, 4X4, 4.0L, Lear cap on the back. Running Cooper HT3 LT265 75 16's at 32 psi. Regular 87 octane (winter blend) gas. No highway driving on the last tank. Went 264 around-town miles and used 18.35 gallons. That's 14.4 MPG.

Last winter I did several tanks of 93 octane and only got about 2 more MPG with the same type of driving. In my case, the higher price for higher octane is not justified.

Just have to remember a few key points. If you add heavy steel bumpers or skid plates, or nerf bars, etc., it adds weight and reduces fuel mileage. If you add a suspension lift or roof or bed racks, you increase the aerodynamic drag and reduce fuel economy. Basically everything you do to increase it's performance on the trail will decrease it's fuel mileage. The more you add, the lower your mileage.

You have to ask yourself what's more important, fuel mileage or off-road performance? If you want the best of both worlds, buy yourself a Corolla as a second car to use as your daily driver and keep your trail rig for weekend play.

I have 112 mile round trip commute. Going to work is not that exciting.

I have the truck for fun on the weekends!

The best I've gotten has been 20.5 (once). That was the day I drove it home so I wanted to see what I could get out of it. Ever since then, been averaging 18.5 - 19. All stock, sport prerunner 265/65/17.

My absolute best was 23 mpg after using almost a whole tank of gas. All highway, driving between 90kmh and 100kmh. 56mph to 62mph. The speed limit was 80 and 90 kph (50mph to 56mph)

I have a 2014 access cab prerunner by with the towing package. Carry about a couple hundred pounds of tools at all times. I also have the 2016 Trd offroad rims, 26lbs I'm pretty sure, with 245 75 16 Michelin highway tires. Mileage is about 21 while goin about 70. Just as advertised really, sometimes closer to 22mpg

i've tried on a couple of tanks keeping it under 2000 rpms on the freeway at peak speed during commuting (with some mixed city driving)... it gets roughly the same 16-17mpg when i drive 2000-2200 rpms hwy/mixed city. maybe it gets 17 mpg under 2000 rpm (like 60-65 mph) and 16+ mpg over 2100rpm (like 70-75 mph). doesn't seem worth it; driving the low lane mixed between big rigs, cement trucks, prius's and leaf's. more braking and speeding back up, or passing uses the same gas as rolling along at 70-75mph 2100-2200 rpm

Last summer i drove 2500 miles towing a trailer and staying in 4. I averaged 65mph and got a consistent 50 miles per 1/4 tank. Tacos get shit gas mileage but i wont drive another truck.

Yup this matches my ‘best tank’ experience.

rolling secondary highways, under 60 mph, not a lot of braking, I broke 20 mpg

I’ve been a road warrior for work the last two weeks. About 1200 highway miles, mostly 75-80 on cruise. Getting 18.5 consistently. Calculate EVERY tank.

I been getting 13-14mpg in my 4 banger. Once you add big tires, a lift, some weight, and regear, the mileage is shitty no matter how you drive it.

most ive seen in my v6 is 18 on the hwy. 4.0L 6spd manual with a supercharger and 4.10 gears for reference.

Best way to put it. Last week I pumped, I managed to get 14.6 MPG. This time around, I'm hovering around 16 MPG. The cold temp, old plugs, and street (no highway) driving doesn't help.

A 4000 mile trip around the new year gave a grand average 16.2 mpg. This was predominantly highway driving at 55-75 mph. The low section in the middle was a few hours crawling through accidents in a snowstorm in 4WD. Ethanol-free fuel was used for probably 90+% of the trip homebound to test if pure gas gave significantly better economy.

2015 Tacoma DC 4WD TRD with ARB bullbar, bed rack-mounted RTT, OME suspension (about 2-inch lift), BFG AT KO2 235/85-16 at 34 psi. Odometer corrected for tire diameter. Generally there would have been more headwind on the first half of the trip, more tailwind on the back half. Both legs were dominated by sidewinds, as I recall.
