    I managed 28mpg with a 2002, I4, 4x4 mated to a 5sp! it's pretty crazy tbh. :bananadance:

I was only ever able to manage 28mpg in my 2.4L 5 lug.

tbh, I'm rather suspicious of your calculations.

How was this calculated, and over what kind of distance/terrain? Tires/psi?

I had a '92 22RE 5lug that would get up to 28 mpg but none of the Tacomas I've owned has come close to that, seldom ever get 20. The 1992 was a 5 speed while all of my Tacos have been automatics. Side note, the EPA estimates on the 92 (bought new), was only 22 hiway, but always did better than that.

With my 03 3.4 auto prerunner I get about 17 average. Running 265/75/r16 bfg ko2’s (basically 32’s) with stock gears. Mine sucks through gas and I don’t drive it too hard either. I also have probably 200-300 lbs of stuff in the back seat and the toolbox at any given time so that doesn’t help lol.

I log all my mileage, fancy google spreadsheet. i started when i moved, 5/20/17. and i have logged every fill-up.
    i have a 2004 2wd reg-cab. i have averaged 21.54MPG over 32,892 miles.
That is technically inaccurate, i have replaced the rear-end and tires last year. so my mileage has been 10% lower than reality. so over the last year it is closer to 24mpg.

Stock size all season radials, synthetic oil in transmission and engine.

Most I ever got out of my 2004 2.7L 4x4/ 5 Speed was 24mpg. And that was 100 miles of coasting down mountains/hills.

Sure, all highway and downhill, you should be getting pretty good mileage.

I can average 22 in my stock 4.0L 4Runner when I drive the 2 hours from my house to my in-law's house up in the foothills and back (small mtn highways), but only if I baby it and piss off everyone behind me. Most of that is because I can drive a pretty steady 55. Freeways where I'm doing 70+, I'm lucky to get 20. Most of the long hauls with the 4Runner I'm getting 12 since I'm towing, lol.

That's pretty normal for a 5 lug. I could get over 30 if I babied it.

I have to laugh though when people claim this kind of mileage in a 4x4 though.

Drove from Jersey to North Carolina in my 2018 double cab or, 3.5l averaged 26.3mpg down, coming home we hit rain, averaged 25.6mpg that was on stock tires at the time, cruising at 65-70mph the whole way, no lead footing it.

I know this thread is for the older models but it's interesting to see they haven't gotten much better lol

That's insane, in the 98 I had (2.7 4x4 manual hubs) Best I ever got was 19 driving non highway but not too much stopping.

15mpg on a good day for the win

I don't log it consistently because it would be too depressing

Were you drafting off 18 wheelers?

If you're using your dash computer, those aren't all that accurate, and tend to over estimate.

I can usually guess to within 1mpg just by looking at my trip odometer and where the gas guage is at. Looks like I lost 1.5mpg from going up a tire size, so getting 19.5-20ish mpg now.

    4 run, 2 don't
    I love these mpg threads.

Fully loaded up, on the highway using cruise control, I still managed 20mpg; I'm talking metal bumper, co2 tank, bed rack, RTT, 2" lift and e rated tires.

Dash computer and calculations from the gallons I out in with the mileage, they were within .5-1mpg of eachother, and yes I was behind quite a few 18 wheelers but not the whole time

I track the fuel economy of all my vehicles on Fuelly. With just general running around town, in the Taco, I’m averaging 17-18 mpg. My commuter Civic on the other hand, she pulls a cool 37-40 mpg. Thank God for the Honda, the Taco would be financial murder as a commuter.

financial murder is paying $13k expecting to save that money instantly :)

If it truly is a beater and cost a couple grand then it would only take a couple years to recoup the cost, otherwise depending on mileage driven sometimes it makes little sense for some people to have a second vehicle. :notsure:
