They use a mirror usually, at least in when I've smog'd.

Although we only have to smog on change of ownership so maybe they're more thorough.

Actually, the tech I've been going to was really on his game. He popped the hood to the Lancer and immediately said "Did you replace the catalytic converter?" He put that thing on the rack and proceeded to remove the little plastic 'skid panel' to gain access to the underside of the CAT. He had to pull the emissions family number which is stamped into the CAT. He said without it and if it did not match the vehicle's emission sticker, it would be an instant FAIL.

Well I think everyone is looking at it the wrong way. These guys want platinum so they can turn it in for cash not knowing that there's tax involved. Precious metals for me I had luxury and Capitol gains as well as federal totally sucked unless a private buyer.

Ok long shot of it is find some destitute junky that has one in his pile of stolen property and point it out as yours. Should be simple enough.

Maybe Prius owners should just put a note with phone number on the car and ask the thieves to spare removing the cat converter and just get a Venmo cash transfer. Save both people time and money.

Just so you are aware. Everyone looks. Why? Because CARB routinely shops smog inspection stations-and when they drive in, they know what's wrong. If the cat is replaced with a stock part, no need for CARB number. The penalty for missing any part of the inspection is severe.

That’s been my impression. Last two cats I bought were carb compliant.

I get the sentiment though of not wanting to buy one. They typically cost 2 to 3 times as much.

Chalk it up to the cost of living in CA.
