engine swap

im thinking of dropping a 318 that i recently stroked and rebuilt into my 2000. has anyone ever tried this and might have some tips for me?

 

did a 383 into a 1985 excab on my buddys truck the two things your gonna need the most of time and $$$$$

 

Extensive fabrication will be needed to fabricate motor mounts. Then you have to deal with electrical nightmare

As said before you will need a lot of TIME an MONEY...

 

yea i know that much. the issue i am worried about its clearence. how much fab will i need to do to be able to fit it in to the engine compartment. how much bigger than a 350 is it.

 

it all depends on how much time you want to put into the build i have seen an LS1 stuffed into a 1982 pickup and he still retained all the a/c equipment and efi systems. im sure like said above custom mounts also an issue is exhaust routing and firewall. when the 383 went into my buddys truck that motor was pulled and replaced half a dozen times to get the location and clearence right a hammer helped move the firewall for the hei, and headers needed a lil help too. a body lift will give u more room under the hood and through the tunnel. i haven't done the swap your planning but there are some of the small problems that i have seen. good luck

 

thanks. if i can get this to work out its going to be a beast. it will be pushing about 600 ftlbs of torque and around 560 horsepower.

 

that's some pretty good power what ru going to use for a drive train? all that power through the stock toyota drive train could be a mess of broken parts just some other things to keep in mind with the build

 

im not real sure yet. im still building the engine up. i do know that it will not be a stock drive train. im thinking about a 4 speed with the granny low out of a old chevy. but im not to sure yet. any ideas?

 

Sounds like a headache.. You're gonna get horseshit milage with any old chevy 4speed, not to mention you wont be able to keep up with interstate traffic at a reasonable rpm.

The cost involved is going to be 5 digits, especially if you cant do it yourself.. I just dont see the need to go backwards with old technology. If you were to swap a v8, it better be an LS series..

 

to start on drive train you have to right idea toyota tranny wont hold up well a great tranny is a iirc nv4500 and there are adapters out to mate that to a toyota tcase then the rear dif looks like you have the 4 im not to up on new tacomas on if they had a differt gear set for the 6 if they did use that and you will still may break it out front if your going 4x4 a sas would be the best option with some bony long shafts and birfields they hold up very well with that power you will tear up the stock ifs and this is all dependent on how you drive it if you just want the look and baby it the stock will last a bit but if you ever plan on off road or getting on it these sock parts are good at holding up to the hp they were designed to be used with after that its a mess don't get me wrong im not trying to talk you out of this build this is just my two cents i give props to anybody that wants to under take a major build like this

yea i understand all that. i dont plane on keeping it very stock. then only interstate time it would be getting is on a trailer. im going build it into a toy for the hills. i will probaly go with danna 60s. and yea it will cost in the 5 digits to get it to were i want it. with the engine alone i will be very close to making it into the 5 digits. just in the bottom end i have close to 5 k in it.

 

Pay some shop to wipe their ass with your money.

 

mmmm . looks like you should go the option of buying a 1500 and throwing the taco body on there ... and as for 5k in the bottom end , it's possible , a friend of mine owns a $38,000 LS1, that being said it's all custom , and i think of last fri the fastest nitrous ls1 in the world, i told him i wanted a copy for my taco
