Electronic Overdrive Questions

I was talking with some friends in class about regearing the truck but hating the thought of being at 3k rpms for a DD. So someone mentioned something IIRC it was called an electronic overdrive.

They mentioned that these devises go between the driveshaft and the back of the transmission. They have a capability of letting you change your overdrive gearing, this is what they mentioned. You can tell it to go from .81 (what I am pretty sure I have) to .7, .65 or whatever it is that you want.

Anyone have any thoughts about this or a good place to read more in depth? The kid mentioned they are mostly used for hotrods because of the 4 speeds they run.

if you re-gear you'll be at a higher rpm but get better gas milage because there will be less load on the engine, right?

im pretty sure its a yes and no answer. yes less load but no because your running such high rpms for such long periods of time. but idk really know

im so torn whether to go with 4.56 or 4.88. iv pm'd people with my tires and both have 4.88 so that makes my choice so much harder because they LOVE it and I drive about 100 miles a day lol

hmm idk man i've been thinking 4.56 myself but have 35's, i'd think you'd be at a really high rpm?

wait i forgot you have a 4 cylinder, well whats your driving routine like now, highway or city?
