Should I worry about tire weight?

Upgrading from stock Goodyear’s on my ‘18 OR. Leaning toward lighter options such as WildPeaks or the GY UT vs something beefier like the Nitto Ridge Grappler. Am I over thinking the weight in relationship to fuel consumption?

You're not overthinking, it's a very simple relationship. Generally speaking, more weight means less mpg. And vice versa.

 

Go with the Wildpeaks. Great tire. Just know if you don’t have a lift, 265/75/16 will rub a touch especially if you have musflaps up front. At least they do for me wrapped onto Ray10s even after removing said mudflaps.

 

You can go standard load with the wildpeaks. They aren't as beefy, but you get a bigger tire, better looks, and less rolling weight. Decent compromise.

SL vs LT has a lot of pro's and con's. Price, weight, durability, and offroading all make up for these choices.

 

I can attest, Cooper St Maxxs have taken a bite out of my MPGs and performance but I was expecting that. Worth the sacrifice, I love the tires!

 

Tired and unsprung weight are pretty much the top two things to care about for any vehicles performance. The lighter the better within the right tools/tires for the job.

 

Tire tire weight has a lot to do with how your suspension behaves as well. I think the factory TRD OR tire/rim was 67ish lbs and my setup now is 98lbs each, it shows more in suspension damping than mpg's but I'm not usually focused on fuel consumption.

 

Light weight is one thing rolling resistance is another. If a loss of MPG is going to break the bank and you need new tires just buy some Michelin Defender LTX

 

Go with the 265/75r16 (standard load, no need for LT’s) I did. Zero rubbing after 14k miles.

Standard load all terrains look so much better than the old days now.

Famous example are the old rugged fails that came on nissans and the old offroad model.

 

I have standard load Nitto RGs, lost maybe 1 mpg.

I went from stock to falken Wildpeak and I’ll tell you this, it’s not so much tire weight rather the all terrain tires have more rollin resistance and your mpg will take a noticeable hit. I lost about 3mpg. 20lbs difference per tire is only 80lbs. For the v6 it’s nothing. If it a 4 banger I’d would choose lighter.

The Goodyear ultraterrians are cool. I am currently using P rated ultraterrians.

I would go Cooper AT3 4s if I could do it again.

 

Agreed. Maybe 1mpg. I can baby it and “avg 19-20mpg” (per the cluster)

 

My cooper at3 4s are my favorite tire in a loooooooong time.

 

I'll get 21-22 sometimes with all green lights on my 30 mile commute to class / clinical. About 18-20 around town and I can be aggressive with the left lane campers.

 

He has an 18’ OR, so V6. And I debated the AT3W myself, I chose the better tire. Ha jk
