Did this fix last night... 510 was completely off and rattling around inside the housing. I did a horrible solder job and it still fixed it. Going to help two other friends with theirs this weekend... Awesome post.

My temp/directional gauge went out also. Cost to much to go to deal ship. Can I buy a new LEC 510 anyplace?

Mine isn't off or anything it just doesn't work anymore. Are you saying just heat up the solder and push the connectors back in and thats all their is to it.

    Please reply to : msahady@yahoo.com

    Thanks, Mike

I checked into this problem with the dealership when I was looking at a used Tacoma DC. The Toyota dealership quoted me $1100 for the temperature/compass console.

I haven't tried this mod/fix but definitely would before paying $1100. I ended up buying new 2010.

I would suggest first melting the solder on to the end of the soldering iron first. Then I simply pushed the 510 resistor ( or what ever the hell it is) down with a pencil (the eraser end). I simply had to touch the soldering iron to the busted end of the 510 resistor and that was it. Let it cool for a couple of seconds before releasing the pressure you are applying with the pencil. Good luck!!!

Good advice; Try not to use too much solder and don't let the tip of the iron touch the board. I'd solder all the connections just to be sure.
I bought an inexpensive soldering iron (it came with solder) at home depot. The fix was easier than I thought. Just take your time.

Thanks OP for the thread... fixed in ten minutes. None of the joints looked broken but once I had lifted one of the resistors off you could see that the joint was fractured underneath. Left a bead of solder on both sides, clamped down with a paperclip and heated the solder on side 1, then side 2, then side 1 again. Works perfect now!

After a year of having this fixed, I just had this blowout the other day. Not sure if the board is shorted or what. Same soldering techniques as everyone else, but I'm back here again.510chip2_07917bf994b3a0028100c209788f2dcd3213fa2d.jpg510chip1_e9dfff1d8db8e7cc94d682d7a8bcadcdb07066d3.jpg

I joined just to say thanks for this thread. I was searching for a new part on the net when I found this article. She's fixed, back in, and my wife will be happy. You know the saying, "happy wife, happy life".
