4 cyl. gas mileage

Mileage has started slipping recently on my 05 2.7L. I've been around 22-24mpg since I bought it. I've been shopping locally for a new air filter but no one seems to carry one. Any suggestions on what/where to buy?

i was averaging 21-23, both city & hwy miles together, took a trip to pa last july, & got 27mpg, went to md back in june & got 25mpg!

 

Definitely. I have an automatic 4 cyl Taco and I often drive to and from my school, in SLO, to my hometown, in SoCal. It's a 2-3 hr drive depending on traffic (half a tank or so for me).

This weekend, I went 70 mph on the way down, got about 22 mpg. That's my average mpg and mph.

On the way back I towed a trailer with my motorcycle on it, and since the towing speed limit is 55, i averaged about 60. Ten miles per hour slower boosted my mpg to 26-27!

Just ten mph difference, even with all that extra weight of the trailer, and it was still worth it!

I'm driving to Davis from SLO this weekend. If I have enough time, I'm going to do the deckplate mod and see if that boosts it even more. On the way back I'll try putting in 91 octane to see if I can boost it even further.

Note how I'm testing each variable individually. I'll let you guys know what made the biggest difference.

 

I have periodically monitored my mileage since getting my '07 access cab 4 cyl. with auto trans in November of '07. Here is my data:

First 25 fill-ups covering 5,155 miles I averaged 19.81 MPG.

From around 9,000 to 10,500 I checked it again and averaged 22.6 MPG.

I have just checked it again for the the last 1400 miles and I am averaging 23.14 MPG.

My truck has 14,800 miles on it as I write this. I switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic at 10,000 miles (Toyota recommends waiting until 10,000 miles to make the switch from dino oil to synthetic). I change oil and filter every 5,000 miles.

I drive about 60/40 local/highway. When on the highway I typically drive 5-10 MPH over the speed limit. Locally I drive the speed limit strictly.

Because of work my truck was loaded with about 500 lbs. from date of purchase until the end of April '08 (about the first 8,000 miles driven).

From reading the various forums when I bought my truck I saw that most owners experienced an increase in gas mileage as miles driven increased. Some owners reported that this continued until the 20,000 to 25,000 mile range. So far my own experience has been the same

 

A trip with my Access Cab 2008 form Orange Copunty to Las Vegas round trip average 30.4mpg. Speed: between 55 to 60 MPH

 

just did a trip to Dallas for 195 mile each way at about 80 with a small trailer for motorcycles in the back on the way up .
cruise control and I got 19.7.
Not that bad at 75 and 80.

 

I have had my 2006 I4 Tacoma since June. I am consistently getting 26 mpg. I generally run about 60% hwy, 40% city. When I am on the hwy, I keep it at 60-65mph. I just put a lift and am getting 32" tires (up from the stock 27") plus 18" rims. I will update yall after a few tanks as to what I am getting after all that. It was a tough choice, but you looks won out over gas savings. Hopefully I can still maintain some decent gas mileage after all this is done.

 

After my last post, I drove to Davis and back, literally five hours and a full tank each way. I started out driving 60 but I just get so antsy driving slowly that I couldn't maintain a low speed, had to give in and bump it up to 70 or so. Deckplate, 87 octane, and a very strong headwind on the way there gave me 24 mpg. On the way back I drove 70 again but I didn't have to battle the wind and I put in 91 octane, which gave me 27.24 mpg! I'm drooling as I think about what the mpg would have been if I had been doing, like, 50 mph. Maybe next trip I can take my time and do 50.

Those of you that drive slowly, do you ever feel like you're just not getting anywhere? I mean, I know it's not THAT big of a difference, but it feels like it.

 

Got my 05 about 3 weeks ago and have gotten 20mpg on the dot. It's a 2.7L 2wd manual. The previous owner had put 30x9.5 tires and 15" rims on it. I don't do much hwy driving, so I'm interested to hear what mpg you get. Oh yeah, with no lift your tires might rub.

 

08 regular cab getting 18-20 mpg. 90% city 10% Hwy

 

My 02 4x4 2.7 4cyl (98k) only gets around 21 mpg. What should I do to boost the mpg back to a higher level?

oil change every 3k, new air filter, tires are where they should be? Roof rack is off due to colder weather...no kayaking.

What gives?

 

Sounds about average for those that drive normal.
Driving habits seem to affect more than any of the snake oil fixes

 

Recently I have been buying gas in 10 gallon incriments, due to the falling gas prices. Today after 2 months of buying partial tanks I filled the tank, I had racked up 1731 miles and purchased 70.78 gallons of petrol. The MPG's came to 24.45. When I bought my Taco I was hoping to get 25 MPG, so it is happening. This figure is for a 60/40 hwy/city driving mix. I am happy.

 

21 mpg with a 4x4 extra cab (heavier then reg) isnt bad really... you didnt say auto or manual but auto's usually get about 1-2 mpg worse than manual

 

Manual. I would never drive an auto.

 

yeah I heard the 2ng gen manuals actually get worse mpg which is a killer... like I said really 21 mpg on the heaviest 4cyl 1st gen taco made (4x4 extra cab) isnt really bad.. I mean I guess you could play with air pressure...switch to lighter synthetic oils and get 1-2 mpg increase.. but I would love to have your truck and get 21 mpg too lol

but before my rims i would get anywhere from 24 all in the city to about 26 mostly highway driving

with the rims, did the math and figured out that when i went around the island the other night, averaged about 50mph, (real speed, not on my speedo) i got 30 mpg

don't do much of that driving though mostly stop and go

 

I drive a 2009 2wd 2.7 sr5 - i get about 600 to a full tank. 79.1 L

 

08 access cab 200 mile trip to college all highway the best i ever got was 22mpg
