Fun math on insurance (try putting those 3 words together): Claims adjusters get bids for a salvage on your vehicle from various sources. Those bids will impact how easily a vehicle is a total loss. A vehicle in the first model year is more likely to total because of parts prices. High parts prices mean the salvage of your vehicle is worth more, it also means it will cost more to repair.

    An example:
Vehicle A is worth 10k and sustains 6k of damages and the salvage is bid at 7k. Insurance has the option of paying 6k to repair the vehicle or pay you 10k and recoup 7k (net outflow of 3k). Your vehicle is totaled and they pay you 10k.

Vehicle B is worth 10k and sustains 6k of damages and the salvage is bid at 2k. Insurance is repairing your car for 6k because that is less than the net outflow of 8k for totaling (pay you 10, then recoup 2).

Vehicle A is a Tacoma (pretending you can find a running Tacoma for 10k). Vehicle B is a Taurus (pretending any used Taurus is worth 10k). Hopefully this was a useful bit of information. Using this you can argue for or against totaling a vehicle if you are ever in that unfortunate discussion. I once saw a brand new Lincoln total with $10k damage (the damage was almost all internal/mechanical) because the salvage bid was insanely high due to parts shortages or some other random supply chain issue.

I think it's safe to say that the OP got a hefty insurance payout, likely bought something other than another Taco as a replacement for his totaled truck, and isn't coming back... :(

This. I didn't put a ton of money down on my truck, I went for the gap insurance because it was literally $100.

Worth it on the off chance I wrecked it in the first couple months of having it.

If the Frontier didn't have 4-wheel disc brakes and intermittent wipers as standard, it couldn't compete with our trucks!

The base 4WD Frontier pretty much gives no reason to even look at an SR or SR5 if you're shopping at a price point. It's a better truck for the money. The depreciation will suck, but people set money on fire all the time on here.

There's a guy living around the corner from work who drives a white 2010 Frontier access cab 2WD; Base model, rollup windows, A/C, 5-speed handshaker, CD player...

When the truck was five years old, he had less than 20K miles on it! He drives it so little that he's exempt from emissions testing!

Always and never, should be used a lot less.

I'll take my 35k financed and as long as I get more than 1.9% (maybe 2.9%, don't remember) returns investing instead, I'm ahead. Which I am, by a lot... Hell, my savings account is just about 2% anyway.

Also, all insurance is basically a scam if you believe in numbers. Whether or not you can financially survive an incident is personal, but just according to the numbers, anyone badmouthing people for not buying insurance should chill lol.
An insurance company that breaks even is the one that's actually worth using, and they all seem to be making money........

Whether to buy a depreciating asset is another story, but if you add in certain tax breaks....

Dark blue means the user has been banned, either temporarily or permanently; Lighter blue like mine is to show support for law enforcement!
