Anytime you take the carrier out, you have to disconnect that connector. Only way to disconnect it is to break it. Also the seals that come in the bearing kits are trash quality compared to the Toyota seals.

Spoke with them this morning. They are ordering a new connector and OEM pinion seal now. Thanks for the help!

I'm leaning to joining this charade of 5.29 disciples. Overdrive gears are useless on 4.30s.

Less saving, more credit cards. I should have said, "planning on investing in 5.29s out of my next paycheck!"

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

Getting gears installed. My question is if it’s necessary/recommended to drive in 4wd for the 500 mile break in? Read all the break in guides I could but didn’t see mention if s specifically. Seems like it would be but thought I’d check with those who have done it before me and are way smarter than me.

Put in the new gears today. Thanks to my new friend @Speed Freek . Man, what a good guy he is. Good personality. Ideal citizen and a patriot.
For folks in So Cal, I'd only recommend him for his mad skills. I drove nearly an hour to go see him, totally worth it.

See full thread of the 5.29 gear change with a lot more pictures here.
Also many thanks to everybody here who helped me along with making this mod happen. I would not have done it without your help, love and support, and answering my dumb questions :anonymous:.

See the difference between the stock gears vs new Nitro 5.29s. Fully assembled core. With solid spacer. No locker. Open differential.

Sealed it up nice and neat

Just pulled the trigger on a set of Nitro 5.29's. Currently shopping around for an install quote in San Diego. So far I've only got quotes between $1300 and $2000. Looking like it will be a bit more pricey than I originally thought to install.

Currently sitting on 33's (285/70r17) with about 700lbs extra weight in armor and camping stuff, and soon adding a 250lb HC rear bumper. So, I'm hoping these gears, and the new 2.0 tune are the ticket to making me love driving the truck again.

Just ran about 288 miles of all highway driving from North CA bay area up highway 80 to 50 to South Lake Tahoe and back, about 100ft elevation to ~ 7,000ft and back. Netted exactly 17 MPG. Downshifted to 5th on the steeper grades, but stayed mostly in 5th and 6th the whole time. I was cruising about 70 for most of the interstate, and down around 50 - 60 once highway 50 was down to a single lane. Not too bad, was hoping for better but this is winter fuel and had a lot of obvious climbing involved. I'm pretty happy and sure it will get even better on Summer fuel.

Alright. I read the first few pages but 108 pages of reading is out lol
    I’m wanting to get gears.
Now I have second gen buddy (supercharged) and says 4.88 is the ticket.
Alllll the other 3rd gen guys pretty much suggest 5.29 lol

When I drive my truck to work it 70 mile round trip. Currently getting about 15 MPG on 285/70/17 OVTuned. Not getting SC or TT.

So. With that being said. Im curious if I should just make the jump to 5.29 and be done with it as I probably will go 35’s next tire go around. If not it’ll stay 285’s for sure.
