That’s an unused space but awkward for a closet. I might be concerned about resale, especially considering how affordable housing is in that area. The SIL lives right outside Atlanta and has twice the house we do for almost half the cost!

As others have indicated, I recommend you reconsider. It will drastically change the space and light, and make the upstairs feel cramped. It could.end up as one of those "why the heck did they do this?" things.
    1. Mock up what it would feel like with some large sheets of cardboard or similar and see what you think. Ask a few friends, too.
    2. Find some other under utilized storage and start tossing crap you don't really need.
    3. If you are desperate, consider just a shallow linen closet at that location.

The quote I got was less than that but I thought it was high. Glad to know it’s totally in line.

The house doesn’t have enough closet space. Since it is wasted space and we are going to be here for a while, might as well make it useful for us. I’ve been in it 7 years already and foresee us being here another 20.

Something like this as a compromise against the long wall

    Or this

The floor space could be a fair bit narrower because it doesn't go anywhere (check code), but for usability you should use narrower double doors on each cabinet, or better yet bypass sliders so that you don't obstruct access when the cabinets are open.

I think that’s the key. Rooms aren’t big enough to add or enlarge a shallow closet?

We could add the closet to the adjacent bedroom, but I think we want it separate from future kids. We plan on putting seasonal stuff in there and my wife has some expensive furs we wouldn’t want kids to get. We would put a lock on it just to keep out curious kids.

Play your cards right and you could use those furs as an excuse to make it a walk-in safe! :boink:

I have a safe already downstairs. It’s only halfway full, but I like where you are going.

Why have one medium one when you can have two large ones?! Now that we are decided on closet or no closet, it wouldn’t be TW without offering solutions on how to spend your $$.

I’d say sex bunker but everyone knows those belong outside.

If you can sacrifice a bit of the kids room without diminishing value, you could still to the built-in cabinets in the hall, but build them deeper into the kids room so you can get full length and width needed for hanging garments.
