It was all the power from those outboards. He should've at least dropped anchor if he planned to stay

    Good for you.

I can recall off the top of my head two recent fatal accidents locally involving sportbikes.
    Who buys them?
Young guys with insufficient seat time on a motorcycle and too much testosterone, that's who.

I'm old enough to remember when the Norton was the fastest production bike you could buy.
    Seems ridiculous now.

My current bike (and I've had motorcycles since I was 16), is a Kawasaki Vulcan, a relatively sedate V-twin cruiser bike.
I'm a speed limit, back roads kind of rider now.
Nevertheless, I've pegged the speedo a couple times on a wide open stretch of road near me.
Just to see what it would do.

One of the bigger sporties would smoke me easily.
Hell, he'd be out of sight before I topped 100 mph.
Sportbikes have ferocious acceleration, which is usually how guys get into trouble.

On that subject, I just started riding in October after taking the MSF course. I wanted to be educated correctly from the get-go and get all the proper gear, and I accomplished this before I even bought my first motorcycle. Once I passed the course and got all my gear, I went out and bought a secondhand Ninja 250 as a starter bike.

I've done my best to approach the new hobby with a conservative, safe and calculated mindset. I've spent hours practicing my low-speed exercises in empty parking lots, and still haven't even had it out on the interstate or highway - local roads only.

With all that said, it is absolutely terrifying how distracted other motorists are. I might be fully educated, well-practiced and covered with all the best gear, but it won't save me from eating pavement when somebody with a smartphone and an SUV decides to drive over me.

That's perfectly fine for a starter bike.
Don't be tempted to get a Hayabusa.

Always assume the guy in that car is gonna do the stupidest thing possible... and leave yourself an escape route.
But you already know that from the MSF course.

    Good luck, guy.

Does not matter how good of a rider you are. Someone pulls out in front of you it's game over.

There is no feeling like it in the world though. The wind hitting you, the agility, the speed. Puts a smile on your face every time. What's life without risk?

This ^^^^^^ but at least you've taken the time to research and educate yourself and are taking the process slowly. Out of all the wrecks I've seen related to sport bikes less than 5% we the fault of anyone other that the rider.
    Money
Testosterone and access are a deadly combination gents! Still can't avoid mishaps entirely (insert distracted drivers FFS) but if you're smart and alert you can dodge a lot.
