I recall paying a similar fee many years in the past when people did not use cards as frequently but it was nowhere near $150.

The body shop that fixed my truck after I got hit by a drunk driver charges a small free for using a credit card, but not $150!

More places are doing it as they are charged by the credit card companies. The ones that charge are cheaper ( cash price) but it should be well posted. Any major purchase ( tires, ect.) I ask for a cash discount

Business pays a percentage to the credit card company to use their service and it looks like they're passing that on to the customer. It sucks but that's their choice. Did they tell him that up front in a quote?

My immediate question was why isn’t the insurance paying for the rental?

This is also a classic example of a monopoly; It was the only body shop in that area of the Outer Banks, so they're able to take almost a month and half to fix a vehicle and charge an exorbitant convenience fee for customers paying with a credit card...

No; He told them he would never recommend the shop to anyone, and I believe he nuked them on Yelp...

Pay cash, knock off the taxes, they pocket it and not report, and I save the taxes and fees. That’s my favorite way of doing business.

I ran into a similar situation as my truck was in the body shop for 48 days, insurance only covered 30 days of rental coverage.

My cousin lived really close to work (he's a park ranger) and was provided with a government vehicle for getting around while on the job, so he didn't really suffer too much as a result of not having a vehicle...

<- Finance guy here, don't hate me

~3% cash discount is typical as that doesn't require paying the merchant fee to the CC company. But $150 on $1700 is damn near 10%. Even after VISA's latest rate hike, its nowhere near that.

Never heard them adding the fee to the invoice price before though. Always just seen the cash price discounted from the bill.

My local stealership (Thompson Toyota in Doylestown) tried to charge me about $1,700 for a front brake job once (calipers, pads, rotors, plus labor). I told both my neighbor and a mechanic friend about this and was told I was being robbed; My dad was out of town, and if I'd handled this on my own I would have gone completely nuclear on the dealer's service department...

Aforementioned neighbor, who got his 2016 BMW 4-series serviced at Thompson BMW, read them the riot act and basically threatened to stop getting warranty and service work done there if they didn't lower the price for work on my truck; Thompson came down $400. Unless my brakes fail before the 2-year parts/labor warranty is up, I will never be going back to Thompson!

and for the record, Thompson provides topnotch customer service, but they are ludicrously expensive (even by stealership standards, in my opinion)...

For the first five years I had my truck, I only brought it to the dealer for warranty repairs, oil changes, and state inspection/emissions testing; Now that my truck is long out of warranty, there is no point in going to the dealer! An oil change at Thompson was about $40 if I remember correctly. I actually pay more for an oil change now at my mechanic than I did at the dealer because I run Mobile 1 full synthetic (About $38 for 6 quarts of oil, and like $12-13 for oil filter and labor); I know how to change oil, but my mechanic can do it in less than fifteen minutes, and I don't feel like dealing with the disposal of the used oil.
