Just my opinion but I wouldn't do this. If you tear loose a hunk of filter media or a shard of metal, with the filter openings on the bottom, that stuff could fall into the engine oil gallery where it could do serious damage.

I could see that being a possibility for sure, but I was acting quickly and did what I had to while camping and in any case it’s been over a year since then and no issues for me. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this as your normal filter removal technique.

I usually just use my hands but out of various oil filter removal tools I've collected over the years, this type of tool is usually my go-to if there's room for it. Works everytime.

I've found it's easier to remove by hand after you've let it cool off. I'm assuming the metal contracts and the threads aren't clamping quite as hard. It also allows time for all the oil to flow out of the filter and there's no need to catch any oil from the built in funnel drain below the filter.

I prefer to come home and get underneath and open my Fumoto valve and allow the oil to drain while hot overnight. After it's drained, I like to pour about a ½ quart of clean oil into the oil fill and allow it to drain with the idea of it pulling the last of the dirty oil in the pan. Not sure if this really helps but I've been doing it for years. At worst it costs me a ½ quart of new oil. If I've done this the night before I then close the valve in the morning and remove the oil filter, fill the new filter ¾ full and install. Add the rest of the new oil and check for leaks.

Every 5000 miles give or take w/ Mobil 1 and factory 'tall' filters. There's two OEM filters available. One has more capacity than the other.

My hand. As long as I can get a decent angle, I seldom use anything else. I do wear rubber dipped gloves to get a secure grip. WhileI log my miles in my book, I also use a permanent marker and mark the new filter inside and outside with the miles and date so if there is a oil related failure [I use Toyota filters] and the dealer removes the filter, it is marked inside before oil was circulated through the filter. Just a little CYA I do on all my vehicles.

I always use ma hands too, but this 2016 I bought a few days ago, with 3,600 miles on it, has not seen its first oil change. I didn't buy the cap wrench and regret it, as nothing has worked and I managed to break a couple of the plastic teeth on the cap. I tried this [IMG], and this shopping_e117fa26a6ea35065fa20add9267b0cfb3ae04e9.jpg, and this upload_2020-1-30_12-48-22.jpg with upload_2020-1-30_12-49-0.jpgthat, my hands again, lots of cursing, and nothing would budge it. Order the wrench on Amazingon and will try it in 2 days. Will update. Anyone think I should get a new cap too?

Yikes. If none of those worked, shame on the idiot that installed it initially.

Hey Mike, It's Toyota! Nobody has changed the oil since it was purchased in 2016.

Also, I always use K&N or Mobil 1 filters. I noticed everyone else said Mobil 1. Did K&N poop the bed with their filters?

Not one oil change in 4 years? Or they changed the oil at the dealership and overtightened it.

For what its worth, most dudes on here use OEM filters. Can get a 10 pack off EBAY for a good price.

I've never had a filter that this couldn't get loose:

That's once I actually had that tool, of course. Before then I'd take the long-screwdriver-through-the-filter approach if something was really stuck.

I have a 2016. It has the plastic cap, and it won't grab. I even tried sand paper in between.

Mike, the 65 yr old woman I bought it from never had the oil changed. I'm the first person to touch the filter cap since it was put on at the factory. Good times. Hopefully the cap wrench will work. I don't know anyone with teenage sons, so I'm lost if it doesn't.
