Ride comfort between the 4x4 Sport, Limited, and Off Road?

    I owned a Sport for about 5k before swapping for the Off-Road (20K on it now) and it's a significant difference. Way less compliant over speed bumps but also much better on-road when it comes to body roll. Most people would not really recognize the difference I'm sure but the differences are there.

    IMO for the best balance, get an SR5. The Limited will be stiffer just because it has 2" less sidewall and if he doesn't plan on doing trails, the Off Road doesn't offer anything that will be a benefit to him.

    Totally agree. I have a Limited and switched the shocks to Bilsteins. Still, my son’s OR is significantly softer on-road, mostly because the added tire sidewall.

    Same here ... ended up buying the OR ... It was a much softer feeling ride which is what I prefer.

    I drive a sport and I would say it rides firmer than some pickup trucks, but not uncomfortable so. It's a good spring setting for general road use. It does jostle you a bit off-road, but it's not an issue for me because I'm rarely ever off the pavement and I never do anything crazy.

    The difference in ride between the different trim is less noticeable than the difference between the DCLB and the DCSB and access cab. The DCLB rides much smoother than the other two by far. I had an access cab and a DCLB and the extra wheelbase length really makes the ride less jarring.

    The description you provided of your Dad's use of the truck is exactly why there is a Sport in the line up. It's the person who wants a great looking truck that will spend the majority of the time on hard pavement, but will also be used for "sport" which will require some off road ability.

    That said, I've had both and currently have a OR although I spend most of my time driving the streets. I don't find the street ride on the OR objectionable. I could have gone OR or Sport when I bought it, but went with the OR because it was available in the color and feature set I wanted and I got a good price on it. As already mentioned, if you buy either and decide down the line you don't like the ride, you don't have to trade it in. Just put some new shocks on and you've got the ride you prefer.

    My thoughts exactly on the hood as well. I think it just means I'm getting old though ;) as I'd rather have nothing obstructing my view than good looks. ;)

    To @SirAshley if Pop is coming from a car or even full size truck, he will notice the body roll of the OR. I've owned 6 full size pickups before switching back to Tacoma and the body roll was significant and not desired to me. Of course, only he can decide. Tell him to go have fun at a dealer and test drive them all.

    it depends on how where you drive. we only get Sport in Mexico, and while it does handle nicely, its shakes you to the bone with every imperfection on the road. it can get tiresome after a while. i read people complaining about the soft OR setup. i wish i had that option. its a truck, not a sports car on a twisted mountain road. Besides, Crawl control and locking diff sure sound WAY better than a fake scoop.

    my appologies. i meant to say useful, beautiful hood bulge. i heard it was purposely designed by Toyota to fit an 18 led bar on it. plus, it alone gives 35HP.

    These threads always start innocently but by the end it's always skewed one way.

    I agree with those that said to have him test drive each to get a feel. Btw, all three have different suspension setup.

    I have a sport, bought it because 98% of my driving is on pavement. I find the ride is much more firm then my wifes suv, and do love how it holds the corners and stability while maneuvering/breaking. You generally do feel bumps and stuff in the road, but I wouldn't say it's too harsh or anything, it's just a tighter setup for those who like responsiveness.

    Thank you all so much for the replies... He definitely plans to test drive the Sport and Limited... He's had some time driving mine and likes it a lot, so he may just end up with an Off Road. While he doesn't have a computer, he does have an iPhone, so I sent him the link to this thread and he's been reading the replies. Lots of good info there so thanks again!

    REMEMBER the only difference is shocks, NONE of which are any good on any trim level aside from the PRO. (Ok possibly the off road has progressive FRONT springs) DON'T choose based on a consumable, replaceable part! It would be like buying one truck because of better braking performance, the only difference being in the pads themselves.

    I had a 2010 SR, wife said it was bumpy, I bought a 2013 Sport, wife said it was bumpy, I bought a 2020 Limited, wife said it was bumpy. You can't win. (but I did)

    I believe the springs and swaybars are different too as i recall someone posting up different part numbers before.

    I drove the OR, Sport, Limited and Pro before deciding on the Sport. Probably 85% of my driving is on the road and the Sport was the most versatile for me in that it's great for the highway, but holds it's own off-road as well.
    AND I like the functional hood scoop, it's function is as a design element that really adds to the looks of the truck.

    By the way, you guys who always say the scoop blocks your vision, what exactly is it keeping you from seeing? I don't see a problem unless maybe if your'e 5' tall.

    Tell your pops to splurge on a PRO and get it over with. PRO suspension takes the cake, period.
