Anyone planning on going to this. I believe I am. Try and keep these trails open and maybe get some clarification on what is open and not. Maybe even be able to influence a little. It is a open house/grant hearing for the El Dorado national Forrest. Feb 12th.

I haven’t really camped up there much.

Is it a good place to go for beginner campers? The wife and I wanna start doing weekend camping trips this spring / summer.

Yeah super nice. There are i think 3 pay campgrounds, but it is also open camping all over out there. Just go to the el dorado national forest website and get your campfire permit. It is free. Hell i did it on my phone from the gas station once.

Aw man thank you for the tips, will do!

We’re probably going to take our dog.. any chance of seeing anything that could threaten her? Snakes or anything?

I know bears are somewhat known in that area right?

Only snakes we have ever seen are water snakes. Never saw a bear, but they are around. They are more scared of you than you are of them and you wont see one during the day. It is not very remote and usually people are around the area.

A lot of crap and too much money spent
This is unfortunate. I always enjoyed going out there and pulling people out of the sand when they would get stuck. I guess the people living in the hills finally won. :(

@LTDSC where are you going to go now?

Anyone have any winter dispersed camping area recommendations for bear valley area? Going to try to sneak up there to ski tomorrow and hoping to find somewhere to camp overnight and ski again Monday. Will be solo so not looking for anything super adventurous. Was thinking lower elevation just not sure how far down I will need to go.

Frank Raines was almost all uphill and little too technical for my ability/skill level. I went their alone and i felt like was going roll a few times. It was really scary. I am not going there again unless I am in a group.

Anything with more flat areas. I hear Knoxville is good?

I’ve done Montino Wash and it’s one of the better trails out there. Right by Johnson valley and about 1 hour east of Bear Valley. Should be a good place to camp as well. Rattle snake are an issue in the heat but it should be pretty cold at night.

    That trail looks fun!

Was it mostly like that pic or was that the gnarliest part?

it’s a pretty good trail. You drive through private property that Bulls roam wild though the first part which was pretty cool to see a bull the same size as my rig, as long as they don’t charge, lol.
As far as the trail it is completely doable with a taco mild lift 33’s. All harder obstacles have bypassed aside from this area. The line I was on was the harder line.

It’s my daily driver and drives great to and from all the trails. So stable yet was kinda concern about the 121 wheelbase compared to my 88 SAS 4runner I sold. But I’m a happy camper.
