I never had it waterproofed.. Toyota didn't specify where the main issues were, they just said it was un driveable. I haven't gone under and looked yet cuz I'm still pissed off.

If a dealer does it, it is more than double of that. I asked for a copy of the itemized bill with the prices. It was just over 17.5K when they replace the frame of my 04.

A new frame is $3920 plus shipping from toyotapartsdeal.com.

I love how that new frame is already rusting by the welds.

Original owner 1997, never received notice from Toyota and was not even aware of this program until I came to this forum. I am in Arizona but that is not an excuse for Toyota not to notify me. I am always under my truck and the paint is still very good but its the inside of the frame rails that I can't see and wonder if they have any paint applied internally. I am hoping the original frames were dipped in the paint instead of sprayed.

However when I removed the transmission cross member that is held in place with 4 bolts, the cross member was not painted where it mated into the frame, in other words it appears to have been painted in place/installed with the 4 mounting bolts. The mating surfaces on the cross member & frame had moderate surface rust on the bare metal along with sections of the long mountings bolts. I sanded and re-painted the cross member and the mating surface on the frame where the cross member slips into the frame.

This is the only issue I have experienced with this rust BS and it is BS. Toyota really cut a BIG corner on these frames as there should have been a class action law suit against them. I am more fortunate than most with just a small area affected that was easy to correct. I will be replacing the 4 mounting bolts with either SS or factory. The black paint that was used is low grade and the frames or any other black sub component was given a "GHOST"coat at best.

The recall only applied to states in the rust belt, so yes toyota didnt have to notify and didnt if your truck was registered in AZ.

Most people think of Arizona as being a dry desert however that is the southern section of the state, the northern section gets lots of snow and there is a large population of people and 1st Gen trucks up there. Toyota kept this issue low key for nefarious reasons in my opinion.

i paid 2200 for my 01 frame. My replacement looks great for having 4 winters under it.. its just the damage done by the asshole that installed it that made me replace it.

at least toyota covered the parts kits for me... i just ate the cost of the frame... and i'll fix the other one for another project.

    That's not bad actually.
I'll either build a frame for mine or just build a different truck. I have a few wheeling seasons left on it before it's at the end of its life. Found a few more holes in the back, no where too critical though.

well hopefully by the end of the year i'll have a frame that can be used as a template for frame rails to be made for SAS swaps. might corner a non existent market!

Hahaha, hard to compete with 2 4 foot sections of 2x3x.120 and another section of rectangle for the front "bumper".

My friend just for his plasma table up and running and hes all hung he about building tacoma frames. I told him there aren't jeeps, no ones going to buy them for a price that will make money. Hes convinced he can build me one, more power to him LOL
