3rd Gen BHLM + Retrofit Projector

I have a set of RX350 projectors, what else do I need to make them work for a 3rd gen tacoma so that my high beams work? I assume I would have to buy a D2S HID kit. Tried combing through the thread but coundlt find any details, appreciate the assistance.

 

The d2s kit should have a selection for your high beams, when you pick the bulb type....I think h11? It adds an adaptor from the D2s high beam solenoid to 9006 standard plug and then another adapter from 9006 to the h11s on the truck

 

Here are my OEM TRD Sport headlights w/the following done:

- Masking/Paint to emulate TRD Pro Headlights
- Lexus RX350 Projectors
- Morimoto 5500K HID Bulbs
- Hiluxtek 35W HID Ballasts
- Diode Dynamics DRL LED board wired to run constant amber

 

Thanks, I was thinking you don't need the last one if you get the high beam splitter?

 

The last one is a high beam bulb replacement. The splitter would still be needed.

 

Edit: Fairly sure this does just go between the OEM to drivers side & the relay input.

that I bought for the project. I've completely forgotten where it goes in the grand scheme. Does it go between the OEM headlight cord & the HD Relay? Do I only need to run a single side of the OEM cords into the relay?

The more I think about it the more I think I want to go full quad and drop in a Profile Hi-lens. Seems like a perfect fit for the high beam spot. Opinions, thoughts?

Edit: The more I think about it I don't use my high beam enough to justify doing a quad so I think I will just try to find a bulb that matches the color of RX350 bulbs.

 

I was thinking of doing this with my GX but having a halogen low beam setup where the Highs are for snow and ice in the winter and HID/LED projector in the Lows location for regular daily use. Have a power switch for the halogens when needed for snow and ice melting. It also seems like a waste as snow and ice really isn't an issue except for maybe 5 days of the year. The profile Hi-lens seems like a better use for space.

New to the forum and the thread. I was able to disassemble the headlight but then ran into a minor speed bump. I want to replace the projector lenses with some clears. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to disassemble the chrome housing with the projector light from the headlight backing?

Hey Vato,

If I'm reading it right, you'll need to remove 3 screws holding the turn signal bucket in, then pop off 3 clips around the bucket that holds the projector+HighBeam bucket. There's two round ones (with a tab on each side, one on the outer edge, one in the top middle), and a rectangular one at the bottom. Helps to remove the rubber seals off the back first, too.

I’m completely new to the taco world. I am attempting my first retrofit by practicing on opening cheap eBay deals. Figured it’s cheaper than having to buy a new replacement.

Biggest thing is patience. Just about all the info I have gathered about doing my retrofit was found in this thread. Read it through a few times and make notes on what you find.

I have a question. Most of the retrofits for projector lights on the thread require the RX350s. Is it possible to use the stock projector and just replace the lens with a clear? I want to run LED’s and not HIDs. Has anyone tried this?

Quick question as I think I’m gonna attempt this over Super Bowl weekend— for painting the cutoff shield, it’s just the larger, lower section only, right? Not the small/thin shield itself that goes up and down?



Also, is it okay to just remove, paint, and then replace the lens via the 4 screws? It looks like there’s just the one layout for it to go back into but I was worried to mess with the alignment.

 

I’d like an answer to this question as well. I’d like to do the same once I buy my projectors. Still unsure of the color choice yet.

Yes it’s fine to paint the front of that shield. Won’t hurt anything removing the 4 screws. You might see a small sliver of the cutoff shield through the front lens, so if you want to paint that too it’s fine.
