Should I use Rustoleum to prevent my roof from getting worse?

I bought my dear Taco merely three weeks ago and it came with this beautiful roof and hood.





The previous owner stated that he babied the truck (but hadn´t engaged the 4wd in about 7 months) and I sincerely doubt it, but here we are. The truck has no mechanical problems, but this eye sore is killing me.

I currently have no money to pay for a 4-panel paint job, and I was just thinking about using some

$9 Rust-Oleum 248658 Stops Rust Reformer Spray Paint, 10.25 oz, Matte Black

Rustoleum to paint over it and preventing it to get any worse.
What do you guys think? Should I just leave it as is until I can afford to paint it or what can I do?

Don't leave it...it will become worse and more difficult repairs will be required moving forward. You probable already know this...I would want to make sure whatever you use that it will be compatible with anything you do when you restore it to it original glory!
With that being said, you have picked up a automotive paint so it should be OK to use....

Would a "rust converter" be a better option?

 

Can I offer a suggestion....
I know often High Schools offer autobody mechanics in school and often they will do small jobs like this at a huge cost savings. Why don't you call your local High School to see if they are interested and if so how much....

 

Never a fan of products that substitute for the real thing...re. bodywork. This will be better than nothing...but will only provide minimum protection until you can have bodywork (glaze) paint and topcoat applied...

 

That roof needs to be repainted. If you don't do something to seal out the moisture, that oxidation will get ugly fast. If your goal is just an interim solution, sand it and rattle can it. If you want something permanent, that will likely run you $500-$600 for a respray.

 

If it was my truck. I rather rattle can it myself that let high schoolers dick around with it.

I'd use dupli-color before rustoleum. I believe the Toyota black sand pearl color code is

$15 BTY1622 7 Perfect Match Automotive Spray Paint – Toyota Black Sand Pearl, 209 – 8 oz. Aerosol Can

BTY1622. Make sure to do proper prep and clear coat it when done.

 

Either wrap it with vinyl or spray it with 4-5 coats of plasti-dip while you save up the money to have it professional painted. Both are easily removable.

 

Remove that surface rust then give it a few coats of rattle can paint then 8 coats of plastidip to seal the roof from future moisture until you can do a body shop repaint.

 

Like the other guys said, sand it and at least prime it to seal the moisture out.

 

I will look into it a bit more, and definitely call my local High School and see if they can replicate "Black Sand Pearl"

Thank you! That quote is a little bit low or socal. I got quoted 3k, 2k and 1,5k. For wrapping I did get a 600$ quote.

I think the consensus is to sand it and cover it until I can have it professionally painted. I will definitely keep you posted!

DO NOT USE RUSTOLEUM ON IT! The thing about rustoleum....is that rustoleum likes rustoleum and hates everything else. If you paint it with rustoleum, you're going to have to completely strip it if you end up wanting to repaint it in the future. Rustoleum will reject other paints (bubble, fisheye, flake etc). If you're going to rattle can it, use duplicolor or go to an automotive paint store and have them mix you the correct paint code in a rattle can. Sand, Seal, Prime, Paint, Clear.

 

You should also try to refinish your headlights. With lenses faded like that, you're gonna have shit output.

 

An 06 isn't Black, it's Black Sand Pearl.
