It took a gallon and a half to do the whole Tacoma with 2 coats.

...aaaaand this just sold me on lining my truck. Been despairing over the fading clear coat and a paint job was too much cash monies.

Yes, two coats rolled on. Those are the stocks from my '18 TRD OR. Thanks!

The clearcoat was non-existent when I brought it home. I had to do something about it, but didn't want to drop money on a decent paint job. This was the most cost-effective way I know to take care of the problem.

Will the extra weight make any difference?

I have heard some crazy estimates on added weight, but from the experience of others, it seems that 2 gallons is what it takes to cover it, so logic says 8 lbs per gallon times two. That's without taking into account the evaporation of the reducing agent.

There's a pickup (not a Toyota) owned by one of the maintenance guys at a hotel I use in San Diego that's been completely covered in sand-colored bedliner, including its bed cap. It looks pretty good, I gotta say.

You're right on, Seagull233, from looking at a black Herculiner safety data sheet. About 70% solids (with xylene the principal solvent) and specific gravity of 1.03.

A friend's neighbor did a wrap on his leased Subaru. Pretty cool idea, actually. Kept the paint in real good condition, and it's removable when you return it.

For a salvage title or a trail truck, I honestly don't see the point in the liner stuff. Like you say, it's hard to patch. That's exactly why I didn't line my bumper or rock sliders in the stuff (or even powder coat them).

Sure, it's more durable, but if you care about how good the paint looks on your trail truck, do you really have a trail truck?

I did monstaliner on my old 2 door explorer, i'll post up a pic later when i get a chance. It was pretty easy to do, the prep was a bit time consuming but I had rust I had to take care of. The stuff smells terrible too, I should've been better about using a respirator the whole time!

Edit-- found a pic on my phone - the stuff still looks good too and it just sits outside at my moms house pretty much year round. It was a big improvement over the shitty ford OEM paint that was peeling off in sheetsex.jpg

My thoughts are that this is less expensive than the full repaint that my truck needs. Plus this is a more durable finish. I am tired of living with brush "pinstripes", rock chips, etc, all of which tend to develop into surface rust. Monstaliner seems to have color options that will match closely with the original paint. I won't paint inside doors, etc, so this will keep it from looking weird.

Nothing a light sanding and a rattle can of clear coat won't fix...

I don't think I'd ever repaint my truck. I'm far too lazy (and cheap), but I've got a few dents and scratches in my '17 4Runner which is my daily driver, and I guess it just doesn't bother me that much.

When I used to race mountain bikes in college, first thing I'd do after building up a brand new $4000+ race bike is kick it over in the shop. You get that "first scratch" out of the way. I found I rode just that little bit faster because I wasn't worried about scratching my new bike. I mean, it never got me on the podium or anything, lol...

I like the matte finish look. I'm sure that I am going this route in the near future (warmer weather).

It really did turn out pretty great, I would 100% do it again if I had an older truck with bad paint. Definitely wait for warmer weather, or a very well ventilated heated garage!
