2019 Tailgate Lock - PN: PK3B6-35JS0

Made use of the good weather on Saturday. Took about an hour and a half to get everything installed without any lift. Very pleased with the result. It's pretty quiet and now I don't have to worry about leaving the tailgate unlocked or carrying the key.

 

Just finished this on my '17. No issues. Nice kit. To me it's worth the premium over the Pop-a-lock.

 

Installed on 18’. Well worth the effort of zip tieing without a lift. By far the worst part of the install for me.

 

Called my dealer's service dept to see what they want to install this on my 2020 TRD Pro.

They have my VIN since I bought it there, they claim this system does not exist as they cannot find it. They said that they can find and install the aftermarket Pop system but that it will void warranty on the truck once they modify the wiring. WTF

My reaction to their gross incompetence in looking up a very simple part was what you'd expect......

Can't wait to take it in for any warranty work. Such confidence in their service and parts department now.


This lack of knowledge and not knowing how to find Toyota parts/options at Toyota dealers is really bothersome.

I've been putting this off because I don't feel like contorting myself to zip tie everything.

 

Most service departments don't work well over the phone. Go in person and you'll get a better response. Remember these guys are making money on turning and burning regular maintenance, not by talking on the phone. Also, the service department is different than the parts department. The parts department will be able to bring it up, just give them the part number. If you're trying to explain what you want and expecting them to find the part number you're over estimating their competence. There are a small few parts professionals at Toyota dealers these days. You do the research and bring the parts guy the part numbers you need. There's just no other way to do it these days. Disregard the guy who said it'd void the warranty because obviously it wouldn't. Honestly, this is something anyone with a set of sockets and screwdrivers can do themselves. There's nothing you can screw up in installing if you just follow the directions and pictures posted in this thread. Just buy the parts from one of the many online Toyota parts wholesalers (Conicelli, McGeorge, Norwalk, etc) and do it yourself.

 

Just search via part number. You'll save at least 20% off the in-person price. I also wouldn't pay to have it installed. Took me 45 minutes and I had an old one to remove. It's easy to do.

I'm a big guy and the zip tying was fine. I had to cut all the old ones and re-do for the OEM version. It's mostly open until you get by the muffler and it's way easier than the other side behind the gas tank.

Oh, and the Pop a Lock will not void your warranty. That's just horseshit. Unless they can prove it caused the problem.

Edit: the reason they may not be able to find the part is because I want to say it's a port installed item and/or limited to sale by Southeast dealers.

I have the pop n lock and it’s pretty loud. Does anyone know if the actuator is quiet ?

Since I have everything wired from my pop n lock, can I just get the actuator and just swap that out instead or re-running all the wires? Has anyone done this ? (Assuming the Tacoma actuator is pretty quiet)

Yah installed mine pretty damn quite. I did install some sound deadening on the tailgate

 

The OEM is much, much quieter. You could more than likely just use the existing wiring from the PopALock, it would take some splicing. But I wouldn't do it. The biggest reason is the OEM kit just plugs in. No splicing, there's a wiring T that just plugs in. The OEM also includes the grommet for under the cab. The OEM kit also includes heat reflective covering around the muffler with metal wire ties. It's just a better solution. Lastly, I'm willing to bet that the actuator from the OEM kit will last much longer. The PopALock kit includes a universal actuator that you could just purchase from a local shop. In my experience they don't last very long.

 

Also regarding the oem wire harness- it has built in fuses in the harness whereas the popn lock does not. But as you said oem includes the grommet and do t forget the tailgate dual harness clip

 

How do you order it? (Where?)

 

Installed the OEM lock today on my 2020 with Factory bed lights. Can’t get over how much quieter it is than the Pop and Lock I had on my 16. Easy install...about an hour and a half.

 

Does it lock/unlock with the door or just the fob?
