What Oil is everyone using

I’m sure this is the most asked question, but what is everyone using? i am looking to do my first oil change on my 2015 Tacoma off road and was wondering if anyone had any opinions or proof on what is good and what is bad oil.

Using an OEM filter is good.

 

You're going to get a lot of different answers here.

Any oil that meets the requirements specified in the manual is fine. Just change it at the proper intervals and you're OK.

I run 5w30 pennzoil ultra platinum at 9-10k intervals as recommended after an oil analysis. Stock filters are the best.

 

I have thought about doing one of these. Kinda cool what it shows.

 

Whatever synthetic is on sale. Once a year Autozone clears out their oil inventory so I picked up several 5qt jugs of Shell Rotella Gas Truck 5w30 (also several Valvoline Syn 5w30) for $10. Before that I had a bunch of Castrol Edge 0w40 Euro laying around that I use for the GTI and Mercedes and put in it. Ran just fine. The 4.0 is super easy on oil, just about anything will work. Mobil 1 is popular on here. All can be had at Walmart for under $27 a jug. Most people overthink it.

Filters around here is a touchy subject, but I've ran OEM to the Fram synthetic filters. Again, the truck isn't that picky. Right now I'm running an OEM D3 that I picked up at the dealer since I got a new drain plug at the same time.

 

Whereas any oil that meets standards is ok, its the oil filter you must be choosey about. Only use oem toyota filters. I use whats on sale and buy toyota filters by he case. I change oil every 5k miles.

Yes I've seen that thread and those two Fram's tested are the bottom end ones. The only one I'll use is the

$10 XG3614 with SureGrip (Pack of 1)

XG3614 or

$9 XG3600 with SureGrip (Pack of 1)

XG3600 (gold can, roughly $9) which are a very stout filter. The innards of the Denso is honestly not that impressive to me. I still have the XG3600 I pulled off my truck I need to cut open.

 

OEM Filter and Mobile 1 5w-30 every 5k. I feel bad for people that use Fram if you dont know why Watch youtube videos of fram filters cut away.

 

I feel OEM is the better choice. That is what I use. Pluss they are about the same prise. More or less. Just my 2 cents.

 

This may not be relevant, but a few years back, I had a Honda XR 650R that I had made street legal. I used Shell Rotella for a while at the recommendation of some folks on the motorcycle forums. My plastic filler cap swelled to the point that I had to use a pair of pliers to remove it. No, it wasn't cross threaded. You couldn't have cross threaded it if you'd tried. It was like this for months. I switched to Mobil 1 and after a few more months, it shrunk back down. It never showed any signs of wear but I still think the Rotella had some seal swelling additive in it. Just food for thought.
I use Penzoil Platinum full syn or Mobil 1 if I can't find Penzoil.
I used Castrol GTX on my old T-100 for 17 years and replaced the valve covers at 221,000 miles. That engine was damn near spotless inside. My nephew is still driving it around Des Moines now and it has just shy of 300,000 miles on it. Other than timing belts, water pumps (a standard PM), a starter, injectors, plugs, oxygen sensors, etc, that engine has never been opened up.
Like others have said, just pick a good oil that meets the specs and keep it changed on regular intervals.

But, Penzoil Platinum full synthetic gets my nod.

 

Rotella Gas Truck is a completely different animal. Made for gas engines and has a decent additive pack. Guess people get a little confused cause they associate Rotella with diesel engines. Although I've run it in my old S10 to Jetta with no issues.

5 years is a little long on the OCI isn't it? Ok, maybe you just bought it?

Everyone has opinions.

The only way to have proof is the oil analysis that @bassbrick mentions above. While that won't tell you which oil is best, it will tell you some clues on the internal health of your engine and give you solid recommendation on OCIs, based on the particular oil sample you sent in.

 

Amazon or eBay are often mentioned.

Just know Toyota doesn't make filters. They are made by the low bid contractor and rebadged for Toyota. And periodically, like all contracts, rebid. So last years batch may not be the same manuf. as this years batch.

Not saying they are bad. Just that they aren't magic.

 

153000 miles with perfect compression using plain Mobil 1 and the oversized m1-209 oil filter every 5000 miles. That’s 30 oil changes. Replace that crush washer every time.
