Installed new stitched leather steering wheel cover

impressive and affordable!

 

Did the steering wheel this afternoon, more like for the better part of today. Overall, I’m happy with it. I removed the center (airbag) and the side trim pieces and stitched onto the wheel. The left side of the wheel is noticeable loose, but not enough for me to undo it. I don’t think Id be willing to go through it all again. There are very slight gaps at the top of the flat part of the wheel at 9 and 3 where the flaps tuck in, but overall, it feels very good in the hand. I guess I can live with a less than perfect result. It is just a cover..

 

Which cover did you get? How long did it take you to finish?

 

The loncky leather steering wheel cover off of Amazon. Took me all of about 6-7 hours to complete. I’ll post up pics in the morning.

i sprained my foot and can't drive so have been hoping to do this (i have the kit in hand). but the rain here.... supposed to get another few hours of it, and i just can't deal with the idea of sitting in a foggy closed cab in the rain for hours. maybe one day i'll get to this.

how was all the stitching for you? i was surprised when i saw no pre-punched holes for the stitching. another guy said laying it out was more PITA than the stitching, but it looks like a huge PITA. just want to be sure what i start i can complete the same day. thanks for the pics.

 

The stitching was not bad. Looking at others results, I can see that I stitched it differently, resulting in very tight threads. I think that if I had done the stitching “correctly”, the product would have had more stretch and I may have been able to tuck it around the edges better, resulting in a tight fit on the left side..but I don’t know. But yes, the stitching was a huge pita, just very tedious. Getting the wrap on the wheel wasn’t too bad. Just have patience and don’t tear it. Being a perfectionist, I may write loncky and request another cover free, or another at a discounted price at least, just to see if I can get it right the 2nd go around. The wheel feels very premium in the hand. Smells like fresh leather! Prepare to take your time..it’s a great mod. Between this and clazzios, the truck will be very nice with leather everywhere!

 

Late to the game here, but looking into doing this mod for my truck to match the red stitching on the seats. Going to order one from AliExpress. Looks to be cheaper and same quality.

Quick question, did you use the contact cement along the edges and seams like the Tundra forum? Or did you just use the tape?

I ended up using tape where the steering wheel touches the column... where the stitching gets tricky.... I used it for two years and it held and looked like oem.. I ended up selling trading the truck and probably the new owner will think it was oem....

Time consuming but it is worth it...

I do not have greasy hands so it kept the matte shine instead of turning glossy...

 

use the tape as instructed and if you want it pro quality you will definitely want to use some cement at the edges and wherever you have a square inch or more without the tape. the cement will do a lot to keep it feeling solid. plan ahead so you can do the two sided application.

 

Agree with this. Glue helps keep it stuck down especially around the 9 and 3 o'clock positions which were the trickiest for me.
