Did you see the door panel I got from a wrecked Tacoma in a junkyard?

Less than 24 hours ago it was dirty and covered in moss!

Well when you step on the pedal the shoes expand and rub against the drum. I am thinking you have metallic shoes that have bits of metal embedded and you are hearing metal on metal. If you switch to a non metallic shoe I think it will stop, you can see what your Dad's mechanic thinks.

What did our trucks come with? And whats got me stumped is that this squeaking started suddenly with a set of rear brakes that had 22K on them; I think the rear axle seal just happened to blow around the same time...

I am not sure what the Factory shoe is composed of. I get the feeling whatever brand they put on is metallic as I cannot think of anything else that would cause a squeak, especially since they keep verifying everything is installed correctly.

I had the original rear brakes replaced in June 2018 at just over 84K miles because they were at less than 50% life when I had the truck inspected in October 2017 and I was told I would probably need new rear brakes to pass in 2018. Those brakes had about 22K miles on them when the axle seal blew in September or October 2019, and were replaced. The squeaking noise started in September or October 2019, and I brought it to the dealer because they had done the front brakes less than a month earlier and they were under warranty; After this whole bloody fiasco, I am 100% done with the dealer.

Is it likely a coincidence that the squeak sounds virtually identical?

Yeah brakes are a scam at the Dealerships, they charge insane labor costs to install $50 brakes.

Paid less than $190 at my trusted body shop to have my first set of replacement rear brakes installed! Butch's Body Works in Danboro, PA is where it's at; What sucks is that it's deer season and he's been swamped with damaged cars to fix...

As much as I loathe the dealership at the moment, I don't think they did anything wrong here.

I worked with a guy that quit his job from Midas because he said he couldn't live with himself over how dishonest they were. He said they would cook up $1000 + brake jobs for people that had worthless cars.

I generally don't trust nationwide chains and franchises, though my cousin gets her 2017 RAV4 serviced at Jack Williams and loves it; I've done my research and Jack Williams is both good and cheap, but there no Jack Williams locations near me (She's over 70 miles from me).

I don't mess around with the dealers very much, last thing I had done there was tires and alignment.

Also, wouldn't a brake job be the same price for an entry-level generic beater no matter what the car is actually worth? I can't imagine a brake job for a 2003 Saturn Ion being much different than a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla of the same year...

It depends on what is getting replaced.

It's a good thing my cousin got 0% financing because she drives a lot, and her RAV4 isn't even three years old yet; She has about 70K miles on it already!

Complete front brake job (since both an '03 Civic and an '03 Ion have front disc/rear drum)...

I don't like anyone touching my vehicles, I would rather do things myself.

That's another reason I hate state inspections...
