This is what I’m afraid of. No offence to your truck, but kinda looks like a hack job to me? No? Did they get the shop Jabronis to squirt that jizz in there and call it good?

This is exactly how they look once done. I'd rather have too much that dries (which it will eventually after about 3 months apparently) than too little and miss coverage

Sigh. I hope that stuff is compatible with my DIY Fluid Film. Got my notice awhile back. Waiting for the spring so I can pull all the skids off and pressure wash before I take it in.

I had this TSB on my 1st gen. Toyota applied this thick black tar coating to the frame, leafs, diffs, suspension, everything but the engine and exhaust. I'm shocked to see that they are using this caulking at all the joints!!

They couldn’t dye that shit a darker color so it doesn’t look like someone tried to seal the frame laminations with latex caulking? Would be nice if Toyota would tell owners what they are slathering on their vehicles. I’ll be checking the insides of my 2018 frame this summer to see if any of the cavity wax was done at factory. I Krown oil spray it every year but that gets the outside and small seams/cracks, not so much the closed frame cavities

Honestly I wouldn't even think they do it right now. They'll just tell the techs, quickly spray the frame with a pressure washer then spray this while it's still wet. We can't afford doing it right, we can't even afford to fix a fucking issue that's been present for over a decade.

That coating is a false sense a security and after a few years it dries out and cracks and then just holds salty moisture on the frame.

And I have no faith in one day they can clean the level of dirt completely out from the frame after 2-3 years of a vehicle being in the road and possible oil sprays.

It's pathetic that after this long Toyota still haven't fixed this properly.

It’s because they only have issues in salt areas, which is a small part of their market. What’s more pathetic is applying corrosive chemicals to roads because people can’t drive. Instead of using sand/grit or mandated winter or studded tires. I fully agree with you post, tho.

The three people I know personally that have had frame replacements all had this coating on it and all have since had more issues with the truck than ever before.

One lost all brakes on his drive home because the dealer didn't bleed brakes

Another no longer has working 4x4 yet had it perfectly fine the day before he brought it in being is winter and with all the snow lots of 4wd use. Dealer is claiming broken actuator but this was right after a frame recall. So they broke the tcase actuator during the swap and now want him to pay $4000 to replace it.

The 3rd has been chasing electrical gremlins now because they pinched a few different wires when swapping frames.

The overall coverage of what they'll replace is very limited and given a vehicle will be relatively older when said swap is done and shit might be seized together or whatever due to age and is only going to break when touched, like the tcase for instance. Yet they won't cover that replacement they'll then charge you for it.

I know for my friend that had his done and didn't have brakes after they also wanted him to pay for things like parking brake cable etc which broke apart when they touched up.

Do what you want but I seriously think you're better off spending the $120 a year to have it oil sprayed by krown, rust check or whatever company you prefer. Than having this garbage CRC coating put on your frame. Or buy fluid film. It regularly goes on sale for $40 roughly for a huge bucket that can coat your truck 2-3 times.

Yet not many other auto makers have rusting out frames just because of salty regions. And a large portion of the US and all of Canada use salt.
Besides even without salt it can still rust and have issues.

I agree grit could be better. But same time it's messy and can still create problems and studded tires destroy the roads if there isn't enough snow and ice. Not a valid option.

Even galvanizing and a better painting could make a huge difference

They have chosen not to fix it, for reasons understood only by Toyota. The science of preventing corrosion of metals with proper coating contains no mysteries. It is well established. We have been painting ships and bridges bathed in salt water, for decades, and we know what it takes to stop rust. No solution is permanent, but more conscientious companies like Ford do manage to make their frames mostly rust free for the first decade or so through proper coating. Even GM adds a layer of wax on top of the paint.

Toyota has chosen to cheat people on this detail, either to speed up production, increase profits, or keep the price-point of the truck low. Probably a combination of all three.

I also own an 2015 Camry that receives no special care or attention, but the underbody (albeit unibody) is totally rust free. Not a spot. Toyota chooses to make the Camrys rust-free and they chose to fuck us on the Tundras, Tacomas, and Runners for reason known only to them.

Maybe it’s finally caught up to them. Hopefully the 2018+ trucks have the $15 of wax or whatever Toyota didn’t bother applying when the truck was new on the previous model years.

Yet Tacomas Tundra etc aren't actually cheap. You can get in an f150 for the same price if not cheaper...

But you're right there's plenty of ways to stop rusting but a rubberized coating isn't much of one. At least not one that has shown to crack after 2-4 years and then speed up the rust issues.
Besides they aren't cleaning out all the dirt and getting contaminants under it.

Maybe if it didn't crack and was applied during production it would help but not after a vehicles already been on the road for 3 years.

I'll stick to my krown annually. Have had great results on previous vehicles
