Been making the mess since 2014.
Saves 30 seconds, and one way or another I never come out of an oil change without getting oily.

I've been changing my oil for close to 20years, I don't think I've ever managed to do it with out a mess. My JKU was the by far the easiest. The cartridge filter was on top of the engine, best design ever. So easy to keep from making a mess.

Yep, my F-350 was up top. Very convenient. Couldn't find that sucker for the life of me the first time I went to do the first oil change. Must have been under the truck hunting it for 10 minutes before coming up for air.

Before TW I thought all was well with my truck and life. Changed the oil no issues with zero specially tools or gadgets (vice grips with rubber pad on that plastic housing ). But then I logged on here and that’s when the doubt and anxiety began to build. Now I have a garage filled with “essential” parts like the metal oil filter housing , ECGS bushing, assorted gen3 servicing tools and I think , really ?
I think this site is a psy-op , set up by parts distributors to trick us into buying all kinds of crap...they got us boys

Just let the dealership change the oil. When they finish, check the level and your good. My dealership has free doughnuts, cookies, soda fountain mixing machine doohickey, coffee, hot chocolate and other cool free snacks. This coming spring they are getting a milk shake station!

It's definitely easier and hell maybe cheaper! But I hate driving to the dealership and dislike giving them money. It's never a 30min ordeal and I like to know what oil and filter are being used. I did the free ones that came with the truck, but this time it was more convenient to do it from home, plus I enjoy it. But holy crap did they snug down the damn oil filter! Thought I was going to have a hernia.

That will happen for sure! The filter would have been a major struggle without the tool. The dealership over tightened the hell out of mine!

that's exactly what i do. not that big of mess, once it starts to run out step away for 30 seconds until it all drains out into a catch can. then unscrew and keep upright and dump into same catch can which by the way will be used to catch the oil from the engine. messing with the drain adapter is just one more thing to put back together that can leak. i have never removed it on my 2016.

Me too, I never undo that bottom part. I just spin off the whole filter assembly. I find to drain that thing takes too much time and with a hose its a mess anyway.

I purchased an oil filter, but it didn’t come with a drain plug. Can you just poke it with your finger to drain? For reference, part # was 04152-YZZA6

Copy, thank you. If treating like a canister then, do you need to pre-fill it and lube it up?

I wouldn't. There appears to be a plastic valve inside there that seals it up. Just unscrew it like normal and make a mess. Or go buy another filter and save it for later.
