Rearview Mirror upgrade?

Hi! I have an absolute basic rearview mirror in my 2017 Tacoma. Can I change it out for one with a compass? I really miss a compass!!!! Can I do it myself? Thank you in advance! T

Changing the mirror is a relatively straight forward job. You can find a factory mirror or an aftermarket one. Then it is a matter of plugging in power. Now it is possible depending on how your truck was equipped that the factory mirror plug might be above the headliner. If it isn't then you will have to find a power source to tap into.

 

You don’t have the compass on your screen between the speedo and the rpms?

 

I upgraded to the home link v5 I believe. I have my stock mirror I’d sell… I think it came with the compass if that’s what you want

Perhaps the OP has a lower level trim. My Sport has a compass in the mirror, on the navigation screen, and in the dash display.

 

I just assumed it was pretty much standard, guess I was wrong go figure.

You can buy a referbed home link off ebay. Plug and play simple. That was one of my first mods......

 

Some of them have an analog dash readout only. My old SR5 just had that. Just displayed miles and trip. The TRD readout has more pizzazz.

ahhh I don't have that the compass mirror on mine. only on the dash and nav system.

 

It saved me this weekend! I was in Kansas City in an area I've been in before so I wasn't using GPS. I suddenly realized nothing was looking familiar and I looked at my compass and... oops! Heading south when I thought I was going west.

And you have a TRD! I wonder if none of the 2019s have them. It's super redundant and I've never thought to look behind me to see where I'm going...

 

If you have a plug on the back of your current mirror (maybe for auto-dim) then it should just be a plug and play dealio. If you don't have that, then you will have to get the right plug and either run it down the A-pillar or some have tapped in to the dome light power but I've also heard of issues being caused by that. If you wanted it, you could also do a homelink mirror, they use the same plug but they have an always on power source and a keyed power source, you can run a keyed powered source for both and then the homelink will only work when the truck is on. If you want a mirror with a compass, shoot me a DM and I'll give you mine for the cost of shipping (it came out of my 2020 sport, used only for the drive home from the dealer )

 

I don't even got the GOpro mount yall got! I did get the tech package. weird.......

 

I'll be damned. Yeah mine doesn't have the tech package. I remember the salesman touting the Gopro mount and me saying "Cool I'll never use that."

I had a Dakota with a compass and temp in the overhead console so I was always looking at it. Then I got an SR5 with no compass and missed it, but got so used to not having one I never use it anymore.

I don't even "see" it when I look in my mirror, if that makes sense.

 

I actually went the other way and took out the compass mirror and used the connector for a dash cam. I put in a plain old mirror with the flipper switch. I found that the auto-dim wasn't very dark and almost a bit bipolar in it's behavior.

Just something to consider.

 

Go old school: glass of water, a leaf floating on top, and a needle laid on top of the leaf.
