    howdy folks,

I'm having trouble shifting into 1st and R (sticky shift). In addition, my 3rd gear occasionally slips into neutral but the shifter stays in 3rd gear position. I bought the truck used a few weeks ago and haven't had a mechanic look at it yet, but the seller told me that the clutch was replaced last week. This is my first standard and I've been a bit rough on it teaching myself. Any thoughts as to what may be causing this? Thanks!

Have a look at the clutch linkage under the dash for worn/loose parts they should be very little play. If it's all OK bleed the clutch hydraulics.

Shifter bushing and seat is a cheap, easy fix

Fluid in clutch reservoir should be clear, if it's discolored use a turkey baster to remove the old fluid in lieu of bleeding. Careful with the fluid as it can dissolve paint. DOT 3-4 brake fluid is used by clutch and brakes. @ground beef

Agreed. This solved my shifting problems, including the "popping out of gear" issue. You can also just buy a new rubber bushing, but they break down.

Good luck. These transmissions are pretty long lasting so I doubt there are any permanent issues.

At 208k mi changing to redline in the transmission made my shifts so much less clunky.

So, the guy at auto zone thinks I’m being too gentle with the shifter... I ended up leaving with coolant and a 1st gen. repair manual... Doh!
