Looking for part number Toyota factory flywheel for 4.0 with 6 speed (2006 4x4 if it matters).
Also, can anyone confirm Aisin was the only supplier for this flywheel.

    Thanks

Supposedly another supplier was LuK; the LuK PN might be listed on RockAuto

I’ve heard there were 2 different suppliers of clutch and pressure plates.
    LuK and Asin.

I’ve not seen or heard of a different flywheel.
This DOES NOT mean there were not different manufacturers.

If anyone here knows, it’s likely @gearcruncher

OP, its 13405-31081. Get ready for a serious shock treatment on price. I just bought one and imported it directly from Japan to save a few dollars.

Once upon a time there were Type A and Type B clutch assemblies. The The Type A was LUK and the Type B was Aisin. Chronic problems with LUK pressure plates and disks caused Toy to finally dump them as a supplier around 2013. Only Aisin PP and discs were available from dealers thereafter.

EDIT: Updated for new part number.

Why would you spend ~$430 on an Aisin flywheel when LuK is $70 on RockAuto

"Get ready for a serious shock treatment on price" Thanks, I know around 600.00 from the dealer is what I was told.

"Why would you spend ~$430 on an Aisin flywheel when LuK is $70 on RockAuto" I had a Luk flywheel put in 2 years ago and the teeth are wearing away, so I tend to believe the QC problems I keep hearing about.

Same with me. LUK was given a very, very long time to fix the problems with their pressure plates and disks on both the 5-speeds and 6-speeds. The problems persisted so Toy finally dumped them. The OEM flywheel I received seems to have been meticulously balanced using both full and partial drill holes so that was somewhat comforting.

When replacing flywheels on any manual transmission , I always go with OEM .
I am well aware of cheaper parts suppliers out there but you dont mess with flywheels for a manual transmission . I would love to see the metal and graphite content in these aftermarket flywheels ??????
If the teeth on your flywheel are worn down , you should be able to purchase a new ring gear for your factory flywheel . Check the link below . Maybe Taco09 knows a little more ??

    Hey, Thanks for the manual.

"When replacing flywheels on any manual transmission , I always go with OEM" - Can you confirm Aisin was the only OEM for the flywheel?

"If the teeth on your flywheel are worn down , you should be able to purchase a new ring gear for your factory flywheel" - The original was taken out when the clutch was replaced 2 years ago. It was suppose to have been replaced with a flywheel from Toyota, but I did not find out until later it had been replaced with a NAPA branded LUK and now I have the issue with the worn teeth. So now I'm trying to go back with all Aisin flywheel / clutch parts.

I do not remember seeing an obvious Aisin logo on mine. I would have to dig it out and take a closer look.

not sure if I should put this LuK in during an upcoming TOB install, or leave the clutch alone. If I do install it though, I'll hang onto the used Aisin and see what it can resurface like in my spare time, and see if shims are needed. So it's ready to swap back in if ever needed.
Or to donate the ring gear from it to put on the LuK.

What even wears out flywheel teeth? I think the only thing that ever engages with them is the starter teeth. I wonder if the starter teeth are shaped a certain way or made of a strong metal that results in damage, etc.

If I knew about the poor design of the 2nd gen Tacoma transmission (TOB), high cost of OEM flywheel, etc. I probably would've tried to buy a 4runner or 1st gen Tacoma. I hear a clutch job on those is $300 in parts all said and done.

I think on Mercedes there was a TSB or something saying to apply a certain grease onto the flywheel teeth, but I don't know why. Maybe it was just to stop a binding sound on start-up or something.
It was a bit tedious, probably requiring cranking the engine over slowly by hand (using a racket and socket on the front crank bolt) clockwise bit by bit, while a helper brushed/painted grease on the flywheel/flex plate teeth through an opened inspection port.

I wonder if the starter gear can be greased too

Internet makes it look like a tube of this paste is only $3...

Something that both lubricates, is the right thickness, and sticks to metal would be the hard part

From what I have been reading, the teeth on some of the Luk flywheels may have been machine a little off where they don't mesh correctly. I'm also wondering if the metal may be somewhat soft.

I know the Luk on mine only has 20k on it since it was put in. I developed a random no start where the starter gear would grind against the flywheel instead of engaging. Rebuilt starter, no change, swapped to another starter off a running truck, no change. First starter had no damage to its gear.

All I have to do to get it to start is rock the truck in gear or roll it a little bit and pop the clutch, so the fly wheel has moved a bit and it its all good. Finally, put an inspection camera in and could see the fronts of the teeth worn off in several areas.
