Anything welding

If the people filling the cylinders with the blended gases tell me something I really hope they know there stuff but of course I always ask at the competition just to double check .It all came about seeing them spinning cylinders so I asked just what they were doing.

If the cylinders sit to long at the fill plant they need to be rolled before delivery it might be a special blend made for one customer

Not so much a problem in industry when your rotating cylinders every week.

Then the hobby user the cylinder can sit for months in some cases years speaking for myself that 300 cubic foot cylinder just keeps on going .

 

Love how smooth flux core is after it’s cleaned.

 

Never knew about rolling bottles of blended gas but I do know about acetylene. You don't need to do it with that and if the bottle has been anything but upright, you need to store it upright for a while before using it or you'll send acetone through your regulator.

There’s a trick to not having to check them. I had to check them on the first two pairs I did and now with the way I fit them I haven’t checked on in over a dozen sets and haven’t had any that were too close together.

Next time you’re a set, if you look real close at the profile of the small tabs you weld to the plate, you’ll notice that they have a slight angle from the cutting process. It very slight but easily noticeable. When you tap them in with the hammer make sure you arrange the little tabs so the angled surface would cause them to lean out like this \_____________/. It’s ever so slightly. You won’t be able to see it on the parts but if you weld them the other way the tabs will sit like this /___________\ it’s slight but it’s enough to make the cams fit too tight.

 

Dont know what made me think of it....but dont forget your fire extinguishers too. Common dry chemical ones should turned upside down and the bottom tapped with a rubber mallet a few times. The powder likes to solidify at the bottom over time.

 

Plasma cutter replacement just arrived and appears to work as advertised.

Thickest thing I had on hand to cut.... Need to dial the air down I think.

 

Severance cut? Doesn't look like a "clean" cut.

 

Couple of questions for plasma cutting gurus...
1. What do I need to adjust to keep the slag from sticking to the opposite edge of the piece?


2. Does it make any sense to dip the torch in the ”tip dip" I use for the mig welder?

 

Very first cut I made. 2 minutes after unboxing.
Don't know yet if it's me or the torch/settings.
Went through it like butter though so I'm guessing I just need to figure things out.

 

Last I heard 8 hours was suggested Never laying acetylene down I never really needed to worry.

But seeing fuel gas put in trunks and minivans just rubs me the wrong way.

It took some time to adjust to. Been a while since I’ve had to run flux core for a production style shop. Some days were tricky with some weird position welds
And still do have to do some tricky positions where a flex head would help a tonnnnn. But. It’s going pretty smooth and fun. Been working on some inner decking for submarines.

They build the submarine sections indoors these days dont they?

 

Apparently. I’m still new to this world. We just built a fixture to make bulkheads for them and will be building them soon as well. Currently I have been working on some decking that goes inside a 3 story submarine. Pretty crazy as I never knew they were that big inside lol

 

Haha they arent all that big once you fit all the equipment in them. Ive honestly never heard them reffered to as 3 stories either. Just so used to upper, mid, lower levels.

Seeing them "raw" like you get to would be pretty interesting though. I only get to see em finished. And of course then wonder why its always the components buried behind a bunch of crap that needs work and not the stuff out front

 

Hahahahah my man, some of the welds and work I see done on these things is mind blowing that it gets approved to go in a sub. I’m not a sailor of any sort. My wife is. I know boat/sub stuff is different lingo than civilians but you get the idea lol.

 

Very true. I dont know how it is when building them....but i know for us pretty much anything of importance is a VT/PT at a minimum with most nuc piping and hull cuts also being RT.

Welding even a simple pipe hanger to the hull is a major pain in the ass cause it ends up falling into the "subsafe" realm of things

 

Yep. I was talking to some guys at work about a little socket needed a 1/2” weld (massive) for something that will end up basically just holding a trash bag lol. Overkill and over thought for simple things. But still, it kills me to see people not take pride in what they do. That’s in every job field though these days.
