Whats up with JD Power giving the new 2020 tacos a lower reliability rating than the 3rd gen past years?

It’s been on the market for 5 years now. Issues pop up over that time.

JD power is nothing more than awards for sale. Consumer reports is usually what I use since they are pretty impartial and really research and talk to owners. As long as you like the truck who cares how many awards it has anyway :)

Reliability rankings are generally very unreliable.

I’ve heard that JD Power is a crock of shit, just like Consumers Digest; Consumer Reports is the only bribe-free one I believe...

I have come copies of Consumers Digest from the 1980s, and the 6.2L diesel used in GM trucks is actually rated as a good buy so that should tell you all you need to know!

By the way, the 6.2L diesel was not a bad engine or unreliable by any means, just unreliable and unrefined.

It’s a 2020. Do you actually trust that they are able to see into the future and determine it’s less reliable?

If I recall, JD powers uses pretty vague metrics to calculate reliability ratings. Things like "omggggggggg, like, my 3G taco auto shifts funny" log as a negative reliability event.

Newer models are getting purchased by younger generations. Younger generations have more to complain about due to the way they were raised.
More consumer complaints, means JD Power logs them as negative marks.

The 2021's are going to be even worse. Sadly, the consumer's chance to buy a reliable Tacoma has passed. I don't know where to place the blame, so I'll just say Mexico.

I need to find some suicidal sucker to offload my '18 on. Between the transmission and the TSS I'm probably putting my life in jeopardy every time I slip behind the wheel.

Just wondering if anyone knew why they would go from a 4.5 rating last year to 3/5 this year. I can’t find anything specific on it. I just don’t see how their rating can change that drastically. The truck is basically the same, aside from a few cosmetic differences. I mean yeah they did change the transmission shifts a bit, but could that cause it to lose reliability points?

Outside of the embarrassment that is Entune, I have scant few complaints with my truck. Certainly none that would prevent me from buying again, or recommending to a friend.

Unfortunately issues with infotainment systems are most of the problems these days. I also find their ratings have nothing in common with the real world. Jeep is always at the bottom but I purchased a New 15 Wrangler and new 16 wrangler 4 door and both were flawless in every way. I know 6 guys with Jeep’s and the only issues they ever had were related to aftermarket stuff they added. I’ve owned 13 new cars and the only ones I had issues with were highly rated by everyone. Just ignore the Ratings, they’ve been irrelevant since the 1980s.

Generally I do the opposite of what Consumer Reports and JD powers say and it has always worked.
