shop told me today that they are most likely totaling the truck... waiting to hear from insurance about final decision.

Need to decide what to get if they do total it.... leaning towards just getting a new 2020 Tacoma but have test driven the new M/T and wasn't a fan so idk

I have a 4 door short bed with an ARE CX Canopy that was involved in a collision with an oversized tire that came off an Army truck. The damage to my truck was very similar, I needed a new Canopy, new rear quarter, new bumper, new tail lights, new tailgate, and new bed. The insurance company picked up the bill of course but it cost $11,000 however $3,700 of that was for the Canopy.

first shop thinks the axle is bent but they were being sketchy between yesterday and today and gave me a super hard time about picking the truck up from the shop. So I think there’s fishy shit goin on, especially with the reluctance that they gave me the truck this morning I think the autobody shop wants to buy the truck back from geico at the salvage price and fix it on their own so they recommended it being a total loss.

My dad and I took the truck to a place where we have gotten work done in the past on our family's cars/trucks and trust the guy so he is taking a look. If the axle truly is bent (which is hard to do) it will be a total loss and I'm gonna be asking for ~26-7k from insurance for the value of the truck but we'll see what happens. Geico not giving me a valuation until tomorrow, possibly Monday

also the first autobody shop is 0.5 miles from the Adesa facility which is a massive car auction place for salvaged/used cars for New England and the lot that they were storing my truck in had a bunch of other trucks with Adesa written on them

If they don't end up totaling it, there is one place I get all my work done right near South Bay, maybe you might want to check it out.

A decent alignment shop will be able to tell you exactly if the axle is bent.

If the axle shaft is bent, the wheel will wobble when rotated. If the axle housing is bent, the alignment will show massive toe in or camber. If the thrust angle is way off, either the spring center bolt is sheared or the frame is bent.

That's a tough call. The 4Runner seems to have all of the goodies that Toyota never saw fit to bring to the Tacoma. For instance, the 4 liter motor (even better than the one in 2nd gen Tacomas), rear disc brakes, bigger front brakes, etc.

I'll never understand why Toyota puts different engines, brakes, etc. in the 4Runner and Tacoma. They're built on the same platform, so they should have the same hardware, right?

And you never heard of a 4Runner frame rotting out either. (Hint: They're built in very different places.)

Toyota can ship engines, brakes, transmissions, etc. to more than one factory in the US. You don't have to build both vehicles in the same factory to have the same engines, etc. in both.

The 4Runner is 100% built in Japan.

Toyota ships those to the US, they can ship the engines, brakes, transmissions, etc. to the US...lol We live in a world economy, and anything built outside of the US should be available here.
